Technicians will meet with clients on job sites to document and determine the client's needs. The technician will perform both soil testing and structural evaluations and inspections for foundation and framing issues and will have autonomy to make some decisions in the field using good judgment while practicing risk management. The technician will write technical engineering reports describing the recommended solutions to meet the needs of our clients. The technician will work collaboratively with other JDS employees in leading the Company toward its long-term vision of being the premier provider of engineering, design, and construction material testing in the Southeast. The Structural Engineering Technician I is expected to act as an ambassador for the JDS brand. Primary Responsibilities and Expectations A Field Engineering Technician I must have knowledge of construction practices and the ability to learn engineering principles. Utilizes equipment to mechanically test soil. Auger and test in place soil for compaction, density and moisture content using a variety of methods. Locating and plotting tests on project data sheets Determining soil types and bearing capacities Manage documentation of soil testing, including all analysis and necessary reports. Ability to search web and other resources for solutions. Obtain other required certifications as dictated by JDS. Technicians perform structural investigations and inspections for foundations and framing. Technicians will meet with clients on construction sites to document and determine their needs. Use engineering principles and JDS Standards to determine a cost-effective and logical solution for the customer. Ability to search the web and other resources for solutions. Obtain other required certifications as dictated by JDS. Create technical reports to effectively communicate our recommendations. Work collaboratively with other JDS Consulting employees in leading the company towards its long-term vision of being the premier provider of engineering and field services in the region. The employee is expected to work on assigned training or cross-training with other departments/positions anytime the employee has not reached 40hrs/wk due to weather or workload.
Qualifications Education:
High school education required. Minimum of 1 year of experience in construction
Experience:
Knowledge of geotechnical testing procedures is preferred. Knowledge of soil sample collection and analysis is preferred. An understanding of structural engineering and design concepts is preferred. Construction experience is preferred.
Skills:
Knowledge of construction practices and the ability to learn engineering principles. Excellent communication and customer service. Excellent math skills. Must be able to read Architectural and Structural plans. Knowledge of soil classification Knowledge of methods for calibrating soil related field equipment Adheres to safety procedures at the project site Working knowledge of various types of construction equipment An advanced knowledge and understanding of wood framing. Ability to learn to track structural load paths and calculate loads on beams and columns. Good decision-making and risk management capabilities. Technical writing skills. Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Gmail, and the ability and willingness to learn new software applications. Excellent organizational skills, communication skills, the ability to multi-task, and most importantly, the ability to work well in a team. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey data both internally and externally. Proficiency with Microsoft and Google applications. Excellent time-management and organizational skills with high attention to detail. Adheres to safety procedures at the project site. Working knowledge of various types of construction equipment. Valid driver's license and strong driving record.
