Southern Company Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Senior Sitework Engineer to support Transmission and Distribution Substation Design, as well as Transmission Line Design projects. This role will focus on civil sitework engineering, including grading, drainage, stormwater design, erosion control, oil containment, permitting, specifications, material requirements, and construction drawings. The ideal candidate will have strong civil engineering experience, an EIT certification, knowledge of local, state, and federal civil design regulations, and hands-on experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and stormwater modeling tools. This position requires strong technical judgment, communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities. Key Responsibilities Support civil sitework design for Transmission and Distribution substation projects. Provide engineering support to the Transmission Line Design Group as needed. Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, material requirements, and design packages.
Design civil sitework projects including:
Site grading Drainage design Stormwater management Erosion control Oil containment Permitting support Read, interpret, and apply design criteria, construction standards, and government regulations. Perform cost estimating and quantity takeoffs for civil construction projects. Support project planning with a focus on safety, quality, scheduling, and cost control. Coordinate with internal teams, external customers, field personnel, and project stakeholders. Support field meetings, construction reviews, and site visits as needed. Provide technical guidance and mentoring to team members. Build effective relationships with peers, customers, contractors, and the general public. Manage multiple projects with varying priorities and deadlines. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering required. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering strongly preferred. Engineer-In-Training certification required. Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to civil grading design and construction. Knowledge of NPDES requirements and general construction principles. Demonstrated ability to design civil sitework / land development projects. Experience with site grading, stormwater design, erosion control, and permitting. Ability to read, interpret, and apply design criteria and government regulations to construction drawings. Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D required. Experience with Hydraflow Hydrographs, ICPR, or similar stormwater modeling software required. Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs. Detailed knowledge of civil construction methods, equipment, techniques, and related costs. Strong computer skills, including proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications. Strong problem-solving, organization, and time-management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate technical issues clearly and simply. Ability to work well in a team environment and build relationships at all levels. Customer-focused mindset with willingness to meet stakeholder needs and solicit feedback. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer license in the state of Georgia strongly preferred. Ability to obtain Georgia PE license within 12 months of hire strongly preferred. Experience supporting utility, power, substation, or transmission/distribution projects. General knowledge of surveying, land acquisition, and easement activities. Knowledge of right-of-way clearing, environmental regulations, crew support activities, and related costs. Experience mentoring others or teaching job-related technical skills.
