Junior Structural Designer Job Description This role offers the opportunity to join a small, growing engineering and consulting firm as a Junior Structural Designer, contributing to a wide range of structural design and consulting projects. You will support structural engineering efforts on facilities such as educational buildings, municipal and cultural centers, offices, airport terminals, utility buildings, and warehouse and industrial structures. Working closely with senior leadership in a collaborative environment, you will gain hands-on experience in structural design, analysis, and documentation using Autodesk Revit, BIM, and traditional CAD workflows. Responsibilities Utilize Autodesk Revit with a focus on structural engineering design to develop accurate and coordinated structural models. Edit and manipulate Revit families and their parameters to meet project-specific design and documentation needs. Independently set up new structural projects in Revit, including linking outside architectural and other discipline models into the structural model. Extract and manage model elements such as grid lines and project levels for use in structural models and drawings. Assist in the preparation of construction contract documents, including plans, details, schedules, and supporting reports. Support structural engineering analyses and design for projects of various sizes and complexities, often working on several projects concurrently. Perform structural calculations using company-standard software and methodologies under the guidance of senior engineers. Contribute to structural design efforts involving concrete, structural steel, and other building materials as required. Assist with condition assessments, feasibility studies, cost estimates, and other structural consulting services as needed. Collaborate closely with engineers and other team members to ensure coordination and quality across disciplines. Communicate clearly with internal team members, responding to questions and design feedback in a timely and professional manner. Participate in occasional site visits to observe existing conditions, support field assessments, and help verify design assumptions. Maintain organized project files and documentation in both BIM and traditional CAD formats in line with company standards. Essential Skills Proficiency and hands-on experience working with Autodesk Revit for structural engineering design. Ability to edit and manipulate Revit families and their parameters to support project requirements. Capability to independently set up new Revit projects, link external models, and extract grid lines and project levels for structural use. Approximately 4 years of experience in design, including taking on design projects with oversight from senior staff. Experience assisting with structural engineering analysis and design for a range of project sizes. Ability to perform structural calculations using company-standard software tools. Knowledge of structural analysis and design principles for concrete and structural steel structures. Understanding of steel connectors and their representation in structural modeling. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with excellent written and verbal English. Experience with residential or commercial structural projects. Background in structural engineering or civil engineering with a structural focus. Proficiency in drafting and design using BIM and/or traditional CAD tools. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a BIM environment and producing coordinated structural output. Familiarity with traditional CAD software such as AutoCAD for structural drafting and documentation. Exposure to structural analysis software such as STAAD or similar tools. Experience contributing to construction contract documents, including plans and technical reports. Ability to support condition assessments, feasibility studies, and cost estimating efforts. Comfort working on multiple projects concurrently while maintaining attention to detail and quality. Motivation to learn directly from senior leadership in a small-firm environment and take on increasing responsibility over time. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a close-knit team. Work Environment This position primarily operates in an office setting using computers and design software for extended periods, requiring comfort with sedentary work and screen-based tasks. The firm can produce work in both BIM and traditional CAD formats, and you will regularly use tools such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, structural analysis software, and standard office applications. The role includes occasional site visits to project locations, where you may be exposed to outdoor elements and inclement weather while observing existing conditions or construction progress. The position offers hybrid flexibility, with the expectation that you are local to the Winchester, VA area to support in-office collaboration and site visits. As part of a small, founding team, you will work closely and one-on-one with the firm's leadership, gaining exposure to diverse project types and direct mentorship. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winchester, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $110000.00/hr.
