Soldering Technician Job Description The Soldering Technician performs rework, repair, and inspection of surface-mount and through-hole printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) used in power electronics products. This role involves precision hand soldering, component replacement, and touch-up work on SMT PCBAs in a manufacturing environment, ensuring all work meets approved workmanship and quality standards. Responsibilities Perform precision hand soldering, touch-up, rework, and repair on SMT and through-hole PCBAs used in power electronics assemblies. Remove and replace electronic components, including fine-pitch and miniature devices, using soldering irons, hot air tools, microscopes, and rework equipment. Diagnose solder defects, short circuits, open circuits, damaged pads, lifted traces, and other assembly issues, and complete repairs to restore full product functionality and quality. Work independently to process and repair a high volume of PCBs, including batches of several hundred boards, while maintaining consistent quality. Read and follow detailed work instructions, assembly drawings, bills of materials, engineering change notices, and quality criteria. Inspect completed work for workmanship, cleanliness, polarity, orientation, and conformance to internal and customer requirements. Maintain ESD-safe handling practices and ensure proper use and care of soldering materials, tools, and equipment. Document repair activities, nonconformances, and disposition details accurately in production or quality systems. Collaborate with quality, engineering, and production teams to resolve recurring defects and support continuous improvement initiatives. Support troubleshooting and verification activities using basic electronic test equipment, such as multimeters, when required. Essential Skills Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience in PCB repair, rework, or a similar repair department role in a manufacturing environment. Proficiency in hand soldering of PCB assemblies, including SMT and through-hole components, with strong surface-mount (SMT) hand soldering skills. Demonstrated ability to solder and rework fine-pitch and miniature electronic components under a microscope or magnifying glass for extended periods. Practical experience working on PCB repair, including diagnosing and correcting short circuits, open circuits, and other common assembly defects. Familiarity with SMT PCBAs and power electronics assemblies. Ability to read and interpret assembly drawings, work instructions, and bills of materials. Knowledge of IPC-610 workmanship standards or similar quality criteria for electronic assemblies. Understanding and application of ESD-safe handling practices and procedures. Ability to use microscopes and magnification tools for detailed inspection and rework almost all day. Basic proficiency with electronic test equipment such as multimeters for troubleshooting and verification. Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving skills and practical judgment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in an in-house repair department or dedicated rework environment. Experience documenting repair activities and nonconformances in production or quality systems. Familiarity with power electronics products and their specific PCB assembly requirements. Exposure to IPC-610 or similar industry standards for electronic assembly workmanship. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, reliable repairs. Work Environment This role is based in a manufacturing and repair environment focused on power electronics and PCB assemblies. You work on first shift with a flexible start time window between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., allowing some adjustment to your daily schedule. The position involves extensive hands-on work at a workstation using soldering irons, hot air tools, microscopes, magnifying glasses, and other rework equipment for most of the day. You operate under ESD-safe conditions and follow established production and quality procedures. The environment is structured, safety-conscious, and quality-driven, with close interaction with production, quality, and engineering teams to support ongoing repair and continuous improvement activities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Poway, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $26.00/hr.
