OVERVIEW
This position is located in the Exhibit Technology Group (ETG), Exhibits Production, Office of Building Renovation and Exhibit Services (OBRES), National Museum of American History (NMAH), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The NMAH is the national museum for the study of American history. Its primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States; to conduct scholarly research designed to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of American history; to publish findings for both scholarly and general audiences; and to interpret historical developments through public exhibitions and programs. The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Electronics Technician and is responsible for supervising the design, integration, deployment, and maintenance of audiovisual and multimedia systems; computerized control and communications networks; and architectural, facility, and theatrical lighting. This position requires occasional work on evenings, weekends, and holidays in accordance with Smithsonian Institution policy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversees and provides engineering and technical services to maintain functioning exhibition technology/AV systems throughout the building.
Plans for and coordinates equipment maintenance and/or replacement in order to assure functionality for the long-term. Ensure the effective and efficient completion of each project such as videography, editing, live streaming, archiving, technical direction, and production management.
  • Effectively manages the maintenance and life cycle/replacement program for all ETG-controlled equipment. Maintains supply inventory. Maintains accountable property inventory. Updates and maintains Exhibit A/V element equipment list. Maintains special events log. Performs as the Property Custodian for ETG responsible to maintain inventory of over 40 tagged museum A/V elements museum-wide.
  • Obtains quotes and assists with purchasing equipment and supplies.
Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain COTR Level 1 certification. Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive media technical program to maximize the operation and efficiency of all the media systems in the Museum, including those in the permanent exhibition, the temporary galleries and other physical areas as identified.
  • Serves as the Museum's expert in exhibition technology and audiovisual system design and implementation.
Regularly meets with appropriate key SI and NMAH stakeholders for the purpose of establishing, upgrading, and maintaining overall exhibition and public programming audio-visual systems and schedules. Routinely provides technical standards and general information regarding ETG current schedules and resources (staff, budget, materials, time, and space) assigned to specific projects or programs. Serves on various Museum and SI committees, task forces, and other panels to assist the Museum or SI in developing priorities, resources, and objectives that are consistent with the Museum's and Institutional goals. Regularly advises Museum, SI, and outsiders on a wide variety of technical audio-visual, ADA captioning, computer software interactives, and multi-media specifications and equipment.
  • Directs, supervises, and plans all work performed by the Exhibit Technology Group (ETG) and any associated contractors.
Sets priorities, prepares schedules, and monitors progress. The incumbent is responsible for scheduling of staff to support 7-day regular museum operations as well as to support after-hours special events and public programs falling outside of regular museum operation hours. Creates/maintains a system for special events billing and tracking of work hours.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Experience:
To qualify for this position, applicants must possess 5-7 years of related experience (described below). Experience required for this position is as follows: Extensive knowledge of the development and maintenance of new, interactive, or conventional multi-media audio-video systems, computer databases, electronic control and data acquisition systems, architectural and display lighting, exhibit maintenance, automated scheduling, and cost estimating. Given the rapidly changing technology in the electronics and computer hardware and software industries, incumbent must stay reasonably abreast of these changes and balance potential acquisition of new systems and components with maintenance of older, more traditional ones.
  • Knowledge to effectively manage a diverse and multi-skilled staff, promoting and developing work within a team-oriented environment Requires ability to plan and direct the Exhibits Technology Group within a very large museum and respond to conflicting deadlines, changing priorities, and limited funding.
  • Knowledge of budget management and analysis, sufficient to prepare, justify, and report on an operating budget for the Exhibits Technology Group.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of audio, video, and control system technologies used in museum, exhibition, and public‑facing environments, including integrated A/V and control platforms (e.
g., Q‑SYS, Medialon, AMX). This includes knowledge of programming, system configuration, and interactive media development using modern platforms (e.g., Unity, Blazor, React) to support the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex exhibit technology systems.
  • Knowledge of industry‑standard design and documentation tools, such as Vectorworks and ConnectCAD, sufficient to produce accurate system designs, schematics, and technical documentation.
