Field Service Manager Position Summary We are seeking a skilled Traveling Surface Plate Calibration Technician to join our precision metrology team. In this hands-on field role, you will travel to customer manufacturing and machining facilities across the U.S. to perform on-site calibration, inspection, wet lapping, and reconditioning of granite surface plates. You will ensure plates meet or exceed Federal Specification GGG-P-463c/ASME B89.3.7 and
ISO/IEC 17025
requirements, helping customers maintain the flatness and accuracy critical to their quality control processes. This is a specialized, high-impact role ideal for someone who enjoys independence, precision work, and frequent travel. You'll work with high precision equipment including autocollimators while representing a company known for excellence in dimensional metrology. Key Responsibilities Travel to customer sites (occasional overnight and multi-day trips) to perform full-service granite surface plate work. Conduct NIST-traceable flatness calibrations and repeatability testing using autocollimation on surface plates of all sizes and grades (AA, A, B). Perform precision wet lapping and reconditioning to restore plates to required tolerances. Inspect, level, and verify plate mounting and support systems; identify and address wear, damage, or environmental issues. Generate detailed calibration certificates, reports, and as-found/as-left data in accordance with ISO 17025 and customer requirements. Provide on-site technical recommendations to customers on plate care, usage, and replacement. Collaborate with the lab team for complex repairs or large-plate projects that require shop support. Adhere to all safety, cleanliness, and quality protocols while working in active production environments. Qualifications & Requirements 2+ years of hands-on experience with granite surface plate calibration, wet lapping, or precision metrology (preferred). Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with precision measurement tools (height gages, indicators, autocollimators, etc.). Working knowledge of surface plate standards (GGG-P-463c, ASME B89.3.7) and
ISO/IEC 17025
quality systems. Valid driver's license with clean driving record and reliable personal vehicle. Willingness and ability to travel 50-75% (home most weekends when possible). High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree, metrology certification, or military PMEL experience a plus. Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs, work on the floor/knees, and handle large granite plates with proper equipment. Preferred Skills Prior field service or traveling technician experience. Experience with large-plate wet lapping (>6 ft). ASQ Certified Calibration Technician (CCT) or equivalent. Basic computer skills for report generation and calibration software.
