full-time Company Description Bikes Not Bombs is a nonprofit organization that uses bicycles as a vehicle for social change and economic mobility for Black and other marginalized communities in Boston and the Global South. Each year, the organization reclaims thousands of bicycles and directs them into local and international programs. These programs focus on skill development, employment opportunities, and access to sustainable transportation. Bikes Not Bombs engages youth and adults as leaders in transforming their communities. Team members contribute directly to this mission by supporting high-quality bicycle repair and refurbishment. Role Description The Repair & Refurbish Mechanic is a full-time, on-site role based in Boston, MA. This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing donated bicycles, including tuning, part replacement, and safety checks to ensure reliable performance. The mechanic refurbishes bikes for sale, donation, and program use, following established quality standards and shop procedures. Day-to-day tasks include organizing and maintaining tools and equipment, performing preventive maintenance, and helping identify parts and inventory needs. The role may also support youth and community programs by sharing technical knowledge, assisting with workshops, and collaborating with staff to uphold a safe, inclusive, and educational shop environment. Qualifications Strong bicycle Maintenance and Maintenance & Repair skills, with experience bringing used bikes to safe, ride-ready condition. Knowledge of Preventive Maintenance practices to extend the life and performance of bicycles and related equipment. Ability to perform Troubleshooting on mechanical issues, including diagnosing problems efficiently and recommending appropriate repairs. Comfort working with Heavy Equipment or shop tools such as stands, truing stands, torque wrenches, and other specialized bicycle tools. Prior experience as a bike mechanic or comparable hands-on mechanical role; industry certifications or training are a plus. Commitment to safety, attention to detail, and ability to follow and improve repair standards and documentation. Interest in Bikes Not Bombs' social justice mission and in working respectfully with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds. Ability to work on-site in a fast-paced shop environment, manage multiple repair tasks, and collaborate effectively with a team.
