Job Description

Job Title:
ISG Technician Job Description The ISG Technician provides maintenance and technical support for complex test cell systems and equipment within an emissions laboratory and proving ground environment. You will troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical systems, calibrate instrumentation, and perform preventive and predictive maintenance to minimize downtime and maximize test cell efficiency. More experienced technicians will own end-to-end project responsibilities and help mentor others, while all team members will receive cross-training across multiple areas of the lab. Responsibilities Troubleshoot and repair all systems and components that make up the test cell facility, including drive systems, fuel systems, dynamometers, pumps, heaters, heat exchangers, and related equipment. Collect and analyze motor vibration data to support predictive maintenance and equipment reliability. Install, calibrate, and maintain cell transducers and other instrumentation, including harness and wiring troubleshooting. Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on a wide range of test cell equipment, including AVL and similar systems, to ensure reliable and accurate operation. Install, set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot exhaust gas emission measurement equipment used for vehicle emissions testing. Fabricate and wire specialty equipment, such as fluid conditioning systems, specialty brackets, and custom carts, using existing or purchased parts and working with or without detailed drawings. Perform electrical work on equipment, including work on 480 VAC and 1000 VDC systems, applying appropriate risk reduction techniques and safety procedures. Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical issues with test cell equipment, applying strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Read and interpret technical documents, procedures, and regulations, and follow them accurately during maintenance, calibration, and repair tasks. Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to reduce downtime, improve equipment reliability, and enhance test cell performance. Collaborate with team leads and fellow technicians, working either independently or in pairs depending on project scope and complexity. Provide technical support to test operations staff, ensuring that emissions test cells and associated data acquisition equipment are ready and available for 24/7 operations. Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and lab-oriented work area that supports safe and efficient operations. For more experienced technicians, lead projects within assigned areas and mentor less experienced team members in maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration practices. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent. 3-5+ years of electrical and/or mechanical hands-on maintenance experience and capability. Proven experience with equipment calibration and metrology-related tasks or strong aptitude to learn these quickly. Demonstrated ability to perform equipment maintenance and upkeep in an industrial or lab environment. Broad troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems. Hands-on experience with welding and fabrication, including the ability to work with limited direction. Comfort working on 480 VAC and 1000 VDC systems, with a clear understanding of associated risks and risk reduction techniques. Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, similar to a maintenance technician skill set. Ability to read and understand technical documents, procedures, and regulations, and to follow them accurately. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills applied to equipment issues and system performance. Ability to install, calibrate, and troubleshoot instrumentation and exhaust gas emission measurement equipment. Capability to fabricate and wire specialty equipment using drawings or general concepts. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with team leads and peers. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate degree in a technical field is preferred but not required. Experience with emissions testing as a dynamometer operator or emissions technician, even without prior maintenance experience. Extensive experience in equipment maintenance, especially on the electrical side, in a test or industrial environment. Experience in equipment calibration and metrology, including understanding how data is measured and applied. Prior work in an emissions lab or similar test facility environment. Experience with Horiba and AVL equipment. Ability to perform welding and fabrication without clear direction is a strong plus. Willingness to cross-train in emissions testing, equipment maintenance, and calibration as needed. Adaptability to work on multiple systems and projects in a dynamic, changing test environment. Why Work Here? You will work at the heart of a global emissions testing operation, supporting the approval of a wide variety of vehicles and future technologies. The role offers exposure to cutting-edge automotive innovations, including electric vehicles and evolving emissions and range testing methods. You will see vehicles and technologies from different regions that are not commonly available elsewhere, keeping your work fresh, engaging, and constantly evolving. The organization supports continuous learning through cross-training across multiple technical areas, enabling you to deepen your expertise and grow your career. Flexible shift options and a structured rotation for weekend coverage support work-life balance while still offering opportunities for additional hours when desired. You will join a small, collaborative team where your contributions directly impact test quality, reliability, and the success of ongoing development programs. Work Environment This position is based in a clean, climate-controlled emissions laboratory located within a proving ground test facility. The environment is fully indoors and lab-oriented, with a focus on precision, safety, and equipment reliability. The team owns and supports all emissions test cell equipment and data acquisition systems within the lab, including servicing, maintenance, repair, and testing activities inside the facility. When work involves infrastructure beyond the test cell walls or ceilings, those tasks are handled by a separate facilities provider. The maintenance team supports test operations that run 24/7, and openings are available across multiple shifts and schedules. Typical shift patterns include options such as Wednesday-Saturday 6:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday 4:00 p.m.-2:30 a.m., a second-shift Monday-Friday schedule, and Sunday-Wednesday 9:00 p.m.-7:30 a.m. Training may occur on first shift. The standard schedule is four 10-hour days per week, with flexibility for candidates to select from available shift configurations. The maintenance team operates with a rotation approximately every third weekend, usually once a month, and additional weekend work may be available for those who want more hours once fully trained. Weekend coverage is handled by a very small crew, typically only two people at a time. You will work closely with a team lead and a group of about six team members per shift, sometimes in pairs and sometimes independently, depending on project needs. The facility uses advanced emissions measurement systems and related test equipment, and the dress code aligns with a technical lab and maintenance environment, with appropriate safety and protective gear as required for working around electrical and mechanical systems Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Milford, MI.
