Job Description
Job Summary As a Level 2 Journeyman Generator Technician, you will independently perform full preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on residential and light commercial generator systems. This role builds on foundational skills, emphasizing diagnostic expertise, customer interaction, and compliance with industry standards while contributing to the mentorship of entry-level technicians. Key Responsibilities Independently perform complete preventive maintenance services, including oil and filter changes, coolant system flushes, battery replacements, belt adjustments, and comprehensive system inspections. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system issues on air-cooled and smaller liquid-cooled generators (e.g., Generac, Kohler, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton). Conduct load bank testing, transfer switch inspections, electrical connection verification, and basic controller programming. Troubleshoot and resolve common faults in fuel systems, alternators, voltage regulators, and engine controls. Complete detailed digital service reports, document findings, recommend upgrades or repairs, and maintain accurate parts inventory usage. Provide professional customer communication, explaining technical issues, service performed, and future maintenance recommendations. Ensure full compliance with NFPA 110, OSHA, local codes, and company safety protocols. Assist with training and mentoring Level 1 technicians on routine tasks and safety procedures. Respond to emergency service calls as part of scheduled on-call rotation. Maintain company vehicle, tools, and test equipment in excellent condition. Qualifications and Requirements High school diploma or GED required; vocational certification or associate degree in electrical, mechanical, or related field preferred. Minimum 2-5 years of hands-on experience in generator service, diesel engines, automotive/heavy equipment repair, or related field. Proven progression from Level 1 (internal) or equivalent external experience. Valid driver's license with clean driving record (subject to ongoing review). Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and perform tasks at heights. Strong customer service skills and professional demeanor. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Skills and Certifications Proficient in mechanical systems, basic electrical diagnostics (120V-480V), and generator control systems. EGSA Journeyman Generator Technician certification required (or obtainable within 6 months). Factory-trained and certified on at least two major OEM platforms (e.g., Generac, Kohler, Cummins air-cooled series) strongly preferred. Proficiency with diagnostic tools, multimeters, load banks, and manufacturer software. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and service manuals.
