Rail Vehicle HVAC Specialist Philadelphia, PA 20 Nov 2025 22067207 Summary Philadelphia, PA In-Person Competitive Salary 2 Years Experience High school graduate or equivalency certificate (GED) No Commission 40.00 hours per week / Day Shift / Full-Time Description Rail Vehicle HVAC Specialist (0850) SEPTA is seeking candidates for the position of Rail Vehicle HVAC Specialist (0850) in both City Transit and Regional Rail. Diagnoses mechanical, pneumatic and electrical troubles of a complex nature; determines extent of repairs, adjustment or replacement. Tests, troubleshoots, repairs and adjusts all types of heating and air conditioning systems and units, including mechanical, electrical and refrigeration components and piping. These heating/refrigeration units may be powered by high or low AC or DC, the compressors driven by internal combustion engines or electric motors which are considered part of the unit for troubleshooting purposes. Checks, adjusts, repairs replaces and/or cleans evaporator cord compressor core and filter; compressors, expansion valves and all other electrical electronic, pneumatic and mechanical controls, switches, relays, regulators, valves, thermostats, switches, wiring and other units. Removes, checks, overhauls, installs and aligns air conditioning compressors, high vacuum pumps and other air conditioning system components and service equipment. Checks, repairs, replaces and installs refrigeration and pneumatic piping and high pressure lines. Performs silver soldering and brazing on high pressure lines and piping and normally works with refrigeration chemicals. Additional Duties as assigned. Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent and HVAC training at an accredited Technical School or equivalent. In lieu of technical school training, 2 years of practical experience in a related field may be substituted. Must have work experience in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment. Must have HVAC Universal EPA 608 Certification Must satisfactorily complete qualifications tests as follows: Electricity/Electronics, HVAC Electrical Schematics, Air conditioning and Refrigeration, Basic Mathematics, Hand Tools. Must satisfactorily complete performance tests as required Must have valid Pennsylvania driver's license or equivalent. Starting wage is $37.07

  • Specialist (#0840), SEPTA is currently seeking Rail Vehicle Electrical/Electronic Maintainers.
We will recruit for current and future openings in our Regional Rail, City Transit, & Suburban Divisions. This position is responsible for the inspection, adjustment, repair/replacement and overhaul of rail vehicles and related accessories. Successful candidates will inspect to determine extent of repair or replacement of parts required; perform layout work; make wiring diagrams indicating new or relocated circuits; install wiring hookups, and rewire damaged or burnt-out circuits.
Requirements include:
  • Formal education should include completion of related technical school training course. Relevant experience (as detailed below) may be considered in lieu of technical training.
  • Must have Demonstrated practical experience, which should include a work history of electronics troubleshooting and repair to component level, schematic interpretation, diagnostic testing, circuit analysis, soldering skills, and the use of computer systems (all relevant experience will be considered).
  • Must satisfactorily complete written qualification tests as follows: advanced electricity, basic math, hand tools, schematics.
High School Diploma or equivalent and valid driver's license are required. Technical school and/or military training in relevant area a plus. Knowledge of National Electrical Code, and ability to read and work from drawings and schematics a must. Own related hand tools.

$38.68/hr. (Increase to $42.98/hr. after 12 months)
  • for
SEPTA Suburban Transit Division:
$37.69hr. (Increase to $41.88/hr. after 12 months)
  • for
SEPTA Regional Railroad Division:
$38.92/hr. (Increase to $43.24/hr. after 12 months) (Note, Candidate Division selection will be based on the needs of SEPTA) Link to
