Job Description
General Summary The Fiber Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fiber optic networks and related equipment. This role ensures reliable connectivity and high-quality service delivery for customers by performing both field and in-office technical work. The Fiber Technician will work independently and as part of a team to support network construction, testing, and service restoration in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Principal Duties and Responsibilities / Knowledge Knowledge of single-mode and multi-mode fiber systems. Installs, terminates, splices, and tests fiber optic cables in both aerial and underground environments. Performs fiber optic troubleshooting using OTDR, light source, and power meter testing equipment. Conducts site surveys and assists in the design and layout of fiber routes and installations. Reads and interprets fiber network maps, blueprints, and splice documentation. Maintains and updates records of fiber paths, splicing documentation, and test results. Identifies, diagnoses, and repairs fiber breaks, signal loss, and connectivity issues. Works safely with various hand tools, power tools, and test instruments. Ensures all work complies with company standards, industry best practices, and safety regulations. Supports network construction crews in pulling cable, setting handholes, and performing terminations. Basic computer literacy for updating records, test results, and reporting. Key Accountabilities Comply with all policies, procedures, manuals and confidentiality requirements or obligations, including those inherent in this position, effective and applicable as a result of employment with Rayburn. Timely shares complete information with others including Rayburn management and staff, contractors, and other third parties, as required. Works closely with Rayburn's IT Teams to ensure seamless integration and efficient operation of network systems and infrastructure. Subject to on call after normal business hours as business needs dictate. Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor or executive management. Acts as a liaison between IT and other business departments. Job Specifications / Skills Required Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or technical certification in telecommunications or related field preferred. Experience 1-3 years of experience in fiber optic installation, maintenance, or related telecommunications work. Certs Certification in fiber optics (CFOT, CFOS/T, or equivalent) preferred. Skills Proficiency in fiber splicing (fusion and mechanical) and testing techniques. Excellent organizational skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Able to work effectively in a team environment; willing to assist others Ability to think independently and problem solve Evidence of an aptitude for critical thinking Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license Strong understanding of fiber optic theory and network design principles. Proficient with fusion splicing and mechanical splicing techniques Working knowledge of aerial and underground fiber installation methods Familiarity with safety procedures, including confined space entry and bucket truck operations
Physical Demands:
Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, or varying weather conditions. Ability to perform repetitive motions in order to use a computer keyboard, test equipment and operate hand tools.Specific vision abilities required include:
close vision, distance vision, ability to distinguish between colors, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds; open file cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. May be asked to climb as a part of field related duties.Similar remote jobs
