Job Title:
Engineering Technician Job Description:
This role focuses on operating, maintaining, repairing, and modifying control automation equipment and systems in a heavy industrial environment. The Engineering Technician performs a wide range of maintenance and technical support activities on equipment, integrated systems, subsystems, and software at customer and field locations. The position involves analyzing and evaluating product performance, diagnosing and resolving malfunctions quickly, installing and upgrading products, and ensuring engineering changes are implemented effectively. The technician also maintains strong customer communication and may provide onsite training to customer support personnel.
Responsibilities:
Operate, maintain, repair, and modify control automation equipment, integrated systems, subsystems, and related software in field and customer locations. Analyze and evaluate products and system performance to identify issues and improvement opportunities. Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in control automation systems and industrial machinery to resolve problems in the shortest possible time. Perform detailed troubleshooting and repair of control automation systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and related electrical and electronic components. Provide technical support for control automation systems, responding to customer and internal inquiries and resolving technical issues. Support the development of new control automation systems, including contributing to design, testing, and implementation activities. Install, upgrade, and remove products and systems while ensuring coordination with engineering on field changes and modifications. Read, interpret, and work from wiring diagrams and schematics to perform accurate installation, maintenance, and repairs. Use test equipment to diagnose faults, verify system functionality, and ensure equipment operates within specified parameters. Maintain effective communications and positive working relationships with customers, providing clear updates and technical explanations. Provide onsite training to customer support personnel on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of control automation systems. Document work performed, including troubleshooting steps, repairs, upgrades, and system changes, in a clear and organized manner.
Essential Skills:
US Citizenship required. AS Degree or relevant certification/degree. 3 years of experience. Proficiency in troubleshooting control automation systems and industrial machinery. Hands-on experience with electronics and electrical systems in an industrial environment. Strong PLC troubleshooting skills, including identifying and resolving logic and hardware issues. Ability to work with PLC programs to diagnose faults and support system operation. Experience with HMI programming, including configuring and modifying operator interfaces. Knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLCs and related control platforms. Controls programming skills for automation systems and industrial equipment. Ability to use test equipment to diagnose, verify, and validate system performance. Competence in wiring and working with electrical circuits in accordance with schematics and standards. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with customers and colleagues. Clear verbal and written communication skills for technical support, documentation, and customer interaction.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Experience in designing PLC and HMI solutions, including logic development and implementation. Background in troubleshooting a wide range of industrial machinery and automated equipment. Experience supporting the development and deployment of new control automation systems. Ability to provide onsite training and guidance to customer support personnel. Strong problem-solving mindset with a focus on resolving issues quickly and effectively. Comfort working independently in the field and collaborating with engineering teams on system changes.
Work Environment:
The role is based in a heavy industrial environment where the Engineering Technician works directly with industrial machinery, control systems, and automation equipment. The position involves hands-on use of tools, test equipment, and computers to support installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities. The environment may include noise, moving machinery, and other typical industrial conditions, requiring appropriate safety awareness and adherence to site-specific safety practices.

Long term, multi year contract.
Pay Rate:
$30-$38/hr based on experience. Benefits offered. 1t shift, Monday-Friday. One step interview process. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Newport News, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
