Job Description

Calpine Corporation seeks an experienced Electrical Engineer III to support reliable, lower-carbon power generation across its natural gas-fired and geothermal fleet. In this role, you will design, analyze, and optimize plant electrical systems, including high- and medium-voltage equipment, protection schemes, and power distribution. You will perform power system studies, support capital projects, and troubleshoot complex issues to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency. Collaborating with operations and maintenance teams, you will apply data-driven methods, ensure compliance with codes and environmental standards, and contribute to continuous improvement and grid reliability initiatives. Responsibilities Design, analyze, and optimize electrical systems for natural gas-fired and geothermal power plants Perform power system studies, load flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination analyses Develop specifications, drawings, and technical documents for new installations and upgrades Support commissioning, testing, and start-up of electrical equipment and systems Troubleshoot plant electrical issues and drive root cause analysis and corrective actions Ensure compliance with safety standards, codes, and environmental regulations Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and project teams to improve reliability and efficiency Support capital projects, vendor evaluations, and equipment selection Use data and digital tools to monitor performance and recommend improvements Provide technical mentoring and guidance to junior engineers Required Skills Power system analysis (load flow, short circuit, protection coordination) High-voltage and medium-voltage equipment design and application Protective relaying and coordination ETAP, SKM, or similar analysis software Electrical drawings and schematics (one-lines, wiring diagrams) Arc flash analysis and electrical safety Project engineering and execution Root cause analysis and reliability engineering SCADA and control systems interface knowledge Familiarity with NERC, NFPA, IEEE, and NEC codes and standards
