Full-Time A growing industrial automation manufacturer is seeking a Lead Controls Engineer to provide technical leadership in the design, programming, and integration of control systems for custom multi-axis industrial equipment used in welding, assembly, material handling, and manufacturing applications. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for driving projects from concept through commissioning while mentoring engineers and serving as the primary technical resource for controls and automation. Responsibilities Lead the design and development of electrical control systems and control architectures for custom industrial automation equipment. Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, servo systems, motion control, and industrial networks. Provide technical leadership for automation projects, ensuring quality, performance, and on-time delivery. Develop advanced control solutions for single-axis, dual-axis, and multi-axis automated machinery. Oversee machine commissioning, startup, I/O verification, system validation, and factory acceptance testing. Lead troubleshooting efforts for electrical, controls, motion, and software issues during manufacturing and field installations. Review electrical schematics, control narratives, and engineering documentation for accuracy and compliance. Mentor and support junior controls engineers and technicians while promoting engineering best practices. Collaborate with mechanical engineering, manufacturing, project management, sales, and customers to develop innovative automation solutions. Support equipment upgrades, retrofits, and continuous improvement initiatives. Participate in customer meetings, provide technical guidance, and support field service activities as needed. Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, machine safety standards, and functional safety requirements. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related technical field. 7+ years of experience designing and programming industrial automation systems. Proven experience leading controls engineering projects from design through commissioning. Extensive PLC and HMI programming experience using Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, or similar platforms. Strong knowledge of servo drives, motion control, VFDs, safety PLCs, and industrial networking. Experience designing electrical control panels and creating electrical schematics. Strong troubleshooting, project leadership, and decision-making skills. Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface directly with customers, vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams. Willingness to travel occasionally for equipment startup, commissioning, and customer support. Preferred Qualifications Experience with custom OEM machinery, automated welding equipment, or material handling systems. Knowledge of Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, Profinet, Modbus TCP, and other industrial communication protocols. Experience with coordinated multi-axis motion control systems. Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN. Previous experience mentoring engineers or leading technical teams. What You'll Bring Strong technical leadership with a hands-on engineering approach.
