Summary Responsible for the design and execution of instrumentation and controls engineering deliverables on water/wastewater and industrial projects. This role requires proficiency in Rockwell Automation PLC platforms, the ability to produce a complete suite of engineering drawings, and the technical depth to specify control panel components and support field commissioning. The Project Engineer - Controls works within a project team environment under the direction of a Project Manager. Essential Duties and Responsibilities You may be required to perform any or all of the following duties. Additional duties may be assigned. PLC Programming & System Design Develop, configure, and test PLC programs using Rockwell Automation platforms: Logix5, Logix500, and Studio 5000. Read, interpret, and apply project specifications and P&IDs to specify instrumentation and control panel components. Develop control narratives, functional descriptions, and loop drawings for project deliverables. Position benefits from exposure to other PLC manufacturers or HMI packages. Control Panel Engineering Create and assemble control panel schematics, loop drawings, and sheet metal/enclosure drawings. Calculate panel heat loads and amperage loadings; prepare subplate and enclosure layouts. Assemble and manage bills of materials (BOMs) for control panels and field instrumentation. Prepare project submittal packages, RFI responses, and design change documentation. Coordinate with the Manufacturing department to ensure accurate and efficient fabrication of control panels; all hardware is purchased by the manufacturer. Project Coordination & Commissioning Coordinate with Project Managers, CAD Technicians, and Field Service Engineers throughout the project lifecycle. Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site commissioning activities. Support startup, debugging, and client/operator training at end-user sites as needed. Organizational Relationships Reports to the Engineering Manager. Works collaboratively with Project Managers, SCADA Project Engineers, CAD Technicians, Field Service Engineers, Purchasing, and Manufacturing. Experience producing panel schematics, loop drawings, and control panel documentation. Working knowledge of process control systems, instrumentation, and analog/digital I/O. Exposure to
SCADA/HMI
platforms is a plus. Strong attention to detail and ability to manage deliverables across multiple concurrent projects. Effective written and oral communication skills. Supervisory Responsibility This position has no direct supervisory responsibility. Education and Experience A Bachelor's degree in Engineering with a minimum of one year of related experience; OR an Associate's degree in Engineering with two years of related experience; OR demonstrated direct experience in Water/Wastewater with a minimum of four years of experience and college-level instruction in a related field. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid driver's license Rockwell Automation certifications preferred (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk) Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee may be required to enter confined spaces and/or climb to high elevations. Travel Approximately 25% travel. Travel to customer sites for commissioning and startup activities. Work Environment This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and related tools. The noise level in the office environment is usually moderate. While performing duties on job sites, the employee may occasionally be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high elevations; confined spaces; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. Employees must follow the rules and regulations of the job site, including drug/alcohol testing, hard hats, safety rules, and steel-toe footwear requirements. The noise level during fieldwork is usually moderate to loud.
