Electrical Engineer Job Description This role focuses on designing, integrating, and supporting software-driven electrical systems within a small, highly collaborative engineering team. You will define electrical architectures, develop application-level software that interfaces with control systems, and contribute to full machine design and verification. Responsibilities Design and develop electrical systems, including wiring architectures and component specifications, for complex machines and equipment. Create, update, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system documentation to ensure accurate and current records. Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot application-level software that interfaces with electrical and control systems, with a focus on Basic-based programming. Investigate and resolve system-level issues that span electrical wiring, hardware components, and software behavior to ensure reliable operation. Contribute electrical expertise within multidisciplinary engineering teams during full machine design and verification activities. Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers to ensure seamless alignment between electrical architecture and mechanical functionality. Assemble and integrate electrical and mechanical components into complete systems, ensuring proper fit, function, and safety. Support system testing and verification, including functional tests, diagnostics, and performance validation of electrical and software-driven systems. Participate in commissioning activities, ensuring that systems operate as intended in real-world conditions. Support field deployments by assisting with installation, troubleshooting, and optimization of electrical and control systems at customer or operational sites. Apply relevant NEC, IEC, or UL requirements when designing and validating electrical systems to support compliance and safety. Communicate effectively with cross-functional team members to identify issues, propose solutions, and drive continuous improvement in system performance. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field. At least 3 years of experience in electrical system design and software-driven systems. Strong experience with electrical wiring design and the creation and interpretation of electrical schematics. Proficiency with Basic-based programming for application-level software that interfaces with electrical and control systems. Hands-on experience with software debugging, diagnostics, and system integration in an engineering or production environment. Hands-on experience with building, assembling, and testing electrical systems and components. Ability to investigate and resolve system-level issues involving electrical wiring, hardware, and software behavior. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex technical issues and implement effective solutions. Effective cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with mechanical, software, and other engineering disciplines. Working knowledge of NEC, IEC, or UL requirements relevant to electrical system design and safety. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience contributing electrical expertise within multidisciplinary engineering teams on full machine design and verification projects. Background in integrating electrical and mechanical components into cohesive systems. Interest in working in a small company environment where team members often wear multiple hats and contribute across disciplines. Motivation to learn new technologies, tools, and processes in both electrical engineering and software development. Familiarity with compliance and safety considerations in regulated environments, such as those involving FDA-approved products. Ability to support system testing, commissioning, and field deployments, including occasional hands-on work at customer or operational sites. Work Environment You will work in a small company of approximately 15 people, including a compact engineering team of about three individuals, which fosters close collaboration and direct communication. The environment encourages versatility, with team members often taking on multiple responsibilities and learning across disciplines. You can expect a hands-on setting where you spend time designing, assembling, and testing electrical and mechanical systems, as well as working with application-level software. The company operates in a highly regulated domain and has successfully developed an FDA-approved product, creating a culture that values quality, safety, and innovation. Work hours and shifts are typical of an engineering office and lab environment, with a balance of desk-based design and documentation work and time spent in lab or shop areas for assembly, integration, and testing. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Brighton, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $48.00/hr.
