Job Description

Cincinnati Test Systems (CTS) is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to lead the design and implementation of control systems for complex, custom-built test equipment, with a focus on advanced leak testing technologies. CTS designs and builds precision test and measurement systems used in demanding production environments. This role focuses on developing reliable control systems, writing high-quality PLC/HMI code, and ensuring systems perform consistently in real-world production. This position is well suited for an engineer who wants to own the controls side of a machine, solve difficult technical problems, and see their work run on equipment used around the world. What You'll Do Take responsibility for controls design and implementation from concept through commissioning and field support Develop PLC and HMI applications that are clear, maintainable, and built for long-term use Define system behavior, including I/O structure, sequencing, and fault handling Design and implement machine safety systems in line with applicable standards Work closely with mechanical engineers to ensure sensors, actuators, and test instrumentation behave correctly within the control system Lead machine bring-up and debug, troubleshooting issues across controls, electrical, and mechanical systems Evaluate system performance using test data and make practical improvements to stability, repeatability, and cycle time Work directly with customers to understand requirements and turn them into working control solutions Help improve internal controls standards, code structure, and development practices Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience) 5+ years of experience working on controls for industrial equipment or test systems Strong experience with PLC programming and HMI development (Allen-Bradley preferred; Siemens a plus) Solid understanding of industrial I/O, networks, and machine sequencing Experience with machine safety systems Ability to troubleshoot complex issues across multiple disciplines Comfortable working directly with customers and cross-functional teams Preferred Experience Electrical design using AutoCAD Electrical or similar tools Experience with motion systems (servos, VFDs) Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, etc.) Experience with data collection or test systems Exposure to SCADA platforms (Ignition, Wonderware, etc.)
