Job Description

Position OverviewThe Controls Engineer provides hands-on technical leadership for automation and process control systems in a regulated industrial manufacturing environment. This role focuses on the design, implementation, commissioning, and long-term support of PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems used in continuous and batch manufacturing processes. Working closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams, the Controls Engineer helps ensure safe, reliable, compliant, and cost-effective operations while supporting capital projects and plant modernization efforts.

Key ResponsibilitiesLead the electrical and controls scope for capital and improvement projects, including hardware design, control panel layout, programming, documentation, networking, data acquisition, installation, and startup support.

Design, build, install, and commission new PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems, as well as modify and support existing control systems.

Develop and implement engineering solutions to improve equipment reliability, process safety, ergonomics, and overall operating efficiency while reducing maintenance and operating costs.

Provide capital cost estimates, schedules, and technical input to project leaders for controls- and electrical-related work.

Deliver technical support to production and maintenance teams on process control, automation, and electrical system issues.

Mentor and train maintenance and production personnel on troubleshooting, operation, and upkeep of electrical and control systems.

Coordinate with and oversee outside engineering firms, contractors, and vendors as required.

Ensure all projects and system changes comply with applicable safety, health, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Support Process Safety Management activities, including documentation, reviews, and controls-related project requirements.

Participate in and support plant startup, shutdown, and major operational events.

Maintain and update plant electrical documentation, including load studies, arc flash analyses, and one-line drawings.

Lead or support controls projects at the primary facility and occasional satellite locations within North America.

QualificationsBachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.

Extensive experience in industrial controls or automation engineering.

Hands-on experience programming PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems in a manufacturing environment.

Ability to read, understand, and safely modify existing control logic in live production systems.

Proficiency with
IEC 61131-3
programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, and function block diagrams.

Experience commissioning new control systems and supporting system startups.

Familiarity with common industrial automation platforms, including PLC and HMI software from major vendors.

Working knowledge of applicable electrical and safety codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA, UL, and arc flash requirements.

Experience with SCADA platforms, CAD tools, and industrial networking is a plus.

Understanding of process safety principles and regulated manufacturing environments preferred.
