Job Description
Job Title:
Electrical Engineer Job Description This role offers the opportunity to own the full lifecycle of advanced analog and mixed-signal circuit designs for high-performance optical measurement and industrial test instruments. You will design and optimize ultra-low-noise signal chains, power supplies, and mixed-signal boards, contribute to embedded systems, and support products from concept through production. The position combines hands-on circuit design, SPICE simulation, prototyping, and close collaboration with manufacturing, customer support, and cross-functional teams to deliver highly optimized, non-trivial designs. Responsibilities Design and maintain analog and mixed-signal circuits from DC to 2 GHz, including small-signal amplifier chains, precision data-acquisition systems, and DC-DC power supplies. Develop ultra-low-noise photodiode front ends and signal conditioning circuits for high-performance optical measurement instruments. Perform detailed analytical and experimental analysis of electrical circuits using SPICE simulation and bench testing, and document results clearly and thoroughly. Manage designs from initial concept through schematic capture, component selection, simulation, PCB layout optimization (component placement and signal routing), prototyping, and production release. Design analog circuitry that supports digital system requirements, including boards with FPGAs and microcontrollers, and adjust power supplies and analog sections to meet digital performance needs. Contribute to microcontroller firmware development for bare-metal and embedded systems used in instrumentation, including participation in programming, debugging, and testing of microcontroller-based subsystems. Assist Manufacturing in developing test procedures and diagnosing problems during production startup of new products. Define testing and acceptance criteria for finished products to ensure performance, reliability, and manufacturability. Provide technical support for Customer Service and Marketing when field issues require electrical engineering expertise. Participate in design reviews and contribute to cross-functional project teams focused on new product development and continuous improvement. Monitor trends and innovations in components, technologies, and techniques relevant to the product lines and incorporate them into future designs where appropriate. Continuously improve the performance, reliability, and manufacturability of existing products through design enhancements and optimization. Develop a deep understanding of the products, key markets, and customer applications to ensure designs meet real-world needs. Potentially manage or lead projects of broad scope and complexity to develop and introduce new or significantly enhanced products into manufacturing. Potentially train or mentor less experienced engineers, sharing best practices in analog design, mixed-signal techniques, and full design flow. Comply with all quality procedures and work instructions throughout the design and development process. Essential Skills BSEE or MSEE, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 4+ years of hands-on experience designing analog and mixed-signal circuits. Demonstrated experience with low-noise signal chain design and data-acquisition systems. Strong fundamental knowledge of analog circuitry, including power supply design, amplifier design, power management, noise reduction, impedance, filtering, grounding, operational amplifiers, power distribution, ADCs, GHz-level signals, and signal integrity. Proficiency with SPICE simulation tools and analytical circuit design techniques from concept through physical PCB realization. Experience with the full PCB design flow, including component selection, schematic capture, and circuit simulation, with an understanding of mixed-signal board design principles. Experience working on boards that include FPGAs and/or microcontrollers, and ability to design analog circuitry that meets digital system requirements. Working knowledge of microcontroller programming and embedded systems. Experience designing or supporting DC-DC power supplies. Proficiency with PCB CAD tools and an understanding of component placement and signal routing for mixed-signal boards. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and prioritize work effectively. Ability to work effectively as both a hands-on contributor and, when needed, as a project lead. Balanced experience in both analog and digital aspects of mixed-signal design, with a focus that leans toward analog design. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Altium Designer or comparable PCB design tools. Familiarity with Xilinx FPGAs and associated toolchains. Familiarity with Microchip PIC microcontrollers and associated toolchains. Experience designing DC-DC power supplies for high-performance systems. Knowledge of high-performance industrial test and measurement instrumentation. Exposure to fiber-optic test and measurement techniques, including OTDRs. Experience ensuring that analog designs support digital application needs, such as power supply and signal integrity requirements for FPGAs or microcontrollers. Some experience with C, C++, or C# for testing hardware and supporting embedded systems development. Experience working effectively as part of cross-functional engineering teams. Interest in monitoring and adopting new components, technologies, and techniques relevant to analog, mixed-signal, and measurement systems. Work Environment This is a hands-on, on-site engineering role in a lab and office environment focused on advanced, non-basic design work. You will work closely with other engineers, manufacturing, and support teams to develop and optimize high-performance instrumentation. The role involves frequent use of SPICE simulation tools, PCB CAD tools, electronic test and measurement equipment, and embedded development toolchains. The schedule is typically five days per week on site, with some flexibility but no fixed hybrid arrangement. The environment emphasizes high levels of optimization, rigorous testing, and continuous improvement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes a performance-based bonus program, paid time off, sick leave, retirement benefits, and health coverage.
