JOB SUMMARY
The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and optimization of control systems across manufacturing operations. This role leads automation initiatives, supports capital projects, and ensures system reliability, scalability, and performance. The Controls Engineer partners with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to drive continuous improvement, reduce downtime, and enhance process capability.
PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and develop control systems, including PLC, HMI, and SCADA architectures for new and existing equipment. Lead automation aspects of capital projects, including scope definition, vendor coordination, commissioning, and startup. Develop, standardize, and maintain PLC/HMI code libraries (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.). Analyze system performance and implement optimization strategies to improve uptime, throughput, and quality. Own and execute root cause analysis for complex control system failures and implement long-term corrective actions. Integrate industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.) and ensure secure, reliable communication between systems. Support and lead equipment upgrades, retrofits, and obsolescence mitigation strategies. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Operations, Maintenance, IT, Engineering) to align automation strategies with business goals. Participate in continuous improvement and root cause analysis initiatives. Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset Experience with robotics including programming (FANUC, ABB)
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Bachelor's or Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or related field preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment working with control systems. Proficient in troubleshooting and programming PLCs, including Allen-Bradley and Siemens platforms. Working knowledge of VFDs, servo motors, sensors, relays, and safety devices. Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, including 480V 3-phase power. Ability to read, create, and modify electrical schematics and control system designs. Excellent problem-solving and communication skills. Must be able to work independently and in a team environment. Willingness to work off-shift, weekends, or be on-call as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Experience with electrical design software (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, etc.) Experience with cabinet or wood product manufacturing equipment. Familiarity with SCADA systems and industrial networking. Knowledge of NFPA 70E and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
