Distribution DesignerJob Description This role focuses on designing and supporting electrical distribution systems while ensuring compliance with industry standards and utility construction practices. You will prepare and modify electrical and roadway design packages, perform field inspections and data collection, and maintain accurate engineering records. The position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting a major utility and to develop a broad understanding of distribution engineering and related disciplines. Responsibilities + Acquire a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), national engineering standards, utility construction standards, and best industry engineering practices. + Develop a broad understanding of engineering disciplines related to distribution design, including design and constructability as applied to construction methods, materials, and associated economics. + Maintain production and quality standards for assigned projects, including accurate collection and management of field data, photographs, engineering analysis, reports, and departmental databases. + Organize and manage all project documents and records in accordance with departmental file management guidelines. + Prepare and modify electrical and roadway drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, graphs, and complete construction drawing packages. + Perform field technical services for the operation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems, including system inventories and audits, joint use management and permitting, pad-mount inspections, ground-line pole inspections, metering and apparatus services, and lighting audits. + Collect field data using a laptop, tablet, GPS, and other electronic devices and enter the data into database software as required. + Develop a working knowledge of telephone, cable, and other communication facilities associated with utility distribution systems. + Operate necessary equipment to take measurements on utility poles and mid-span facilities, perform pole inspections, and inspect and perform maintenance on pad-mount equipment. + Present ideas effectively in both formal and informal settings and communicate clearly in writing and verbally with internal teams and external clients and agencies. + Use email and telephone communications professionally and ethically, keeping supervisors and coworkers informed and sharing complete and accurate information. + Perform other duties as assigned to support distribution design and related engineering activities. Essential Skills + Experience or training in distribution drafting and design. + Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar CAD drafting software for utility and distribution design. + Working knowledge of CAD software for preparing and modifying drawings and construction packages. + Foundational understanding of power distribution, power delivery, and distribution engineering concepts. + Ability to perform utility design work, including electrical and roadway layouts. + Strong drafting skills for creating and updating technical drawings and documentation. + Ability to collect and interpret field data using laptops, tablets, GPS, and other electronic devices. + Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present ideas clearly to various stakeholders. + Ability to manage project documentation and maintain accurate records in accordance with departmental standards. + Reliable vehicle and ability to meet motor vehicle record (MVR) requirements. + Willingness to learn and develop expertise in distribution design and related engineering standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Associate degree or higher in a relevant field (such as engineering technology, drafting, or a related discipline). + Interest in gaining experience supporting a major utility and working on large-scale distribution projects. + Ability to develop knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and other applicable industry standards. + Capacity to learn about telephone, cable, and other communication facilities associated with utility infrastructure. + Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing multiple tasks and project deliverables. + Comfort working both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Work Environment This position initially operates in a remote work environment, with approximately 25% of the time spent on field visits to collect data, perform inspections, and support distribution system operations. Field work involves using laptops, tablets, GPS devices, and other electronic tools, as well as equipment for measuring utility poles, mid-span facilities, and pad-mount equipment. There is an expectation that an office will be established in the Greater Allentown area, at which point the role will transition to a hybrid schedule that combines in-office work with remote and field-based activities. The work environment emphasizes professional collaboration, consistent communication, and adherence to engineering and safety standards while providing opportunities to gain practical experience with utility distribution systems. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Lancaster, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $36.06/hr.
