Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) in the Tickle College of Engineering is responsible for the department's infrastructure and safety, which include the following: maintaining and coordinating teaching labs, research labs, and keeping department spaces/offices equipped and in good operational condition. serving as the department's Lab Safety Advocate (LSA), developing and enforcing safety rules along with campus safety offices, overseeing safety training and safety record keeping for personnel to ensure regulation and policy compliance. overseeing the department's parts store, mechanical shop, and non-IT procurement efforts (including staff supervision) Regular interaction with multiple stakeholders: visitors, administration, faculty, and students Coordinate with Facilities Services, vendor personnel, and any outside contractors to ensure building maintenance and job requests are executed appropriately and timely Oversee moving, installing, maintaining and commissioning of equipment in building Coordinate departmental laboratory commissioning and decommissioning Submission and tracking of work orders, coordinating project estimates between department and Facilities Services Oversee and manage departmental building and space access (key and card) via Planon Serve as safety lead for the department, including all safety committees within the department Oversee all aspects of building and lab safety, including maintenance of hygiene plans, SOPs, building placards, chemical inventories, hazardous waste disposal, building space safety assessments & inspections Assign, track, and enforce appropriate safety training/compliance for all departmental personnel Provide guidance to faculty, staff and students and interface with university organizations on safety, training, building codes, OSHA requirements Maintain department's Building Emergency Action Plan (BEAP) and Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) Supervise and manage personnel in the parts store and mechanical shop Manage departmental non-IT inventory and space survey efforts Understand and help facilitate all aspects of purchasing, from purchase orders to contracts Required Qualifications Education and experience: Vocational or technical training in Electronics with at least 7-10 years' experience in power, power electronics, and mechanical oversight Associates degree in Electronics with at least 4-7 years' experience in power, power electronics, and mechanical oversight Experience and knowledge of lab and facility safety, codes, regulations. Supervisory and management experience Some financial and/or budgeting experience Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.
Preferred Qualifications Education and experience:
Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering with 1-3 experience in mechanical, power or power electronics related areas, preferably in an academic or industry research facility. Experience setting up and managing research lab spaces Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Very strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills Supervisory, leadership experience, and decision-making skills Ability to respond to continually changing priorities and coordinate multiple projects Continuously observe and evaluate operations to identify problems and/or opportunities for improvement Knowledge and understanding of OSHA and other safety standards to ensure departmental compliance for employee safety and required training Strong computer skills (MS Office including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, inventory management tools/applications, safety management tools/applications) Lift up to 50 lbs
