Job Description

Located in the Greater Detroit Area, we are an Industrial Machinery Manufacturing company that has been around for decades specializing in the design, manufacturing, and installation of custom industrial doors and safety systems. Our products include high-cycle, heavy-duty vertical lift, swing, slide, and folding doors for industries like automotive, mining, and test facilities, along with
UL508A/ UL
60947-4-1-certified control panels.

We are seeking an experienced Panel Designer / Industrial Controls Engineer with strong knowledge of
UL 508A / UL 60947-4-1
requirements to design, document, and support manufacturing of industrial control panels. The role is responsible for developing electrical schematics, control panel layouts, BOMs, and shop drawings while ensuring compliance with
UL 508A, NEC, NFPA, CSA/CE/IEC
standards and internal quality controls. The successful candidate will collaborate with electrical engineers, procurement, field technicians and vendors to deliver high-quality, manufacturable panels that meet safety, performance, and customer requirements.

Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop detailed electrical schematics, ladder diagrams and wiring diagrams for control panels that meet
UL 508A / UL
60947-4-1and applicable code requirements.

Create control panel layouts and 2D/3D shop drawings for panel fabrication, including component placement, DIN-rail mounting and enclosure cutouts.

Select components and generate complete Bills of Materials (BOMs) with manufacturer part numbers, alternatives and vendor information.

Ensure compliance with
NEC, NFPA, UL 508A / UL
60947-4-1 and relevant
CSA/CE/IEC
standards; prepare and maintain compliance documentation for UL certification.

Perform SCCR (short-circuit current rating) assessments, arc-flash awareness/coordination checks and grounding/bonding design input.

Perform thermal and electrical load calculations to validate heat dissipation, conductor sizing and overcurrent protection.

Design cable management, harnesses, wire numbering and labeling schemes to support efficient wiring and field serviceability.

Integrate PLCs, VFDs, motor starters and other control devices (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, etc.) into panel designs and schematics.

Prepare revision-controlled drawings, maintain version history, and manage change control and quality assurance processes.

Collaborate with fabrication shop, commissioning teams and vendors to support assembly, testing, troubleshooting and field modifications.

Create test procedures, assist with factory acceptance testing (FAT) and support on-site commissioning as needed.

Interpret P&IDs and incorporate instrumentation and control interfaces into panel designs.

Use
CAD/E-CAD
tools to produce accurate, manufacturable deliverables and support continuous improvement of standard designs and templates.

QualificationsAssociate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or equivalent technical experience.2+ years of hands-on experience designing industrial control panels, with demonstrable experience with
UL 508A / UL 60947-4-1
compliance and documentation.

Proficiency with EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical or similar electrical CAD tools; strong Microsoft Excel and Visio skills.

Deep understanding of
NEC, NFPA, UL 508A / UL
60947-4-1 and familiarity with CSA, CE and IEC standards for control equipment.

Experience developing wiring schematics, schematic and ladder diagrams, wire numbering/labeling and BOM generation.

Proven ability to perform SCCR assessments, arc-flash coordination awareness, conductor sizing and thermal/electrical load calculations.

Practical knowledge of PLC integration, VFDs, motor starters, contactors, circuit breakers, fusing and terminal block/DIN-rail practices.

Experience with component selection, sourcing support and communicating technical requirements to procurement and vendors.

Strong troubleshooting and testing skills, including preparation of FAT procedures and support during commissioning.

Familiarity with panel fabrication practices and the ability to produce clear shop drawings and assembly instructions.

Excellent attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience with revision/version control and change management.
Preferred:
UL 508A / UL 60947-4-1
shop experience, experience with relay logic, Siemens and Allen-Bradley systems, and knowledge of
CSA/CE/IEC
compliance pathways.
