Job Title:
Design Permitting Technician Job Description The Design Permitting Technician supports utility design projects by creating detailed plan and profile drawings, performing permitting research, and preparing complete permit packages using AutoCAD and Civil 3D. This role contributes to overhead and underground electric utility projects, ensuring designs meet company standards, safety requirements, and governing regulations. The position offers the opportunity to work on a mix of field and office tasks, develop expertise in utility design and permitting, and grow into a lead resource guiding more junior team members. Responsibilities Create plan and profile drawings for utility projects, including layers of survey, line types, contours, and surfaces in Civil 3D. Perform permitting research and develop complete permit packages in alignment with general local permit requirements. Design for a variety of utility customers using AutoCAD, including overhead and underground electric utility projects. Complete drafting tasks, engineering calculations, easement validation, and design and construction cost estimating for utility design projects. Process permit files accurately and ensure all required documentation is complete and compliant. Review and interpret electronic pole diagrams and incorporate them into design work. Use GIS Smallworld to review, identify, and resolve potential conflicts or required updates in project areas. Support survey activities and participate in field work related to overhead and underground lines, inspections, testing, and documentation of power distribution, compressors, and other related facilities. Coordinate projects for construction across multiple departments to help ensure timely construction and alignment with customer, crew, and client needs within negotiated time frames. Learn and apply company safety rules and policies, company design standards, and governing authority regulations to all daily work and designs. Ensure all designs meet applicable company safety standards, distribution construction standards, and relevant regulatory requirements. Manage multiple projects simultaneously, tracking progress and deliverables to achieve timely, successful completion and high levels of customer satisfaction. Act as a resource to guide more junior team members in plan and profile creation and permitting research as experience is gained. Drive to field locations as needed to support fielding activities, site reviews, and data collection for design work. Essential Skills Proficiency with AutoCAD and strong CAD drafting skills. Experience with plan and profile development, including working with survey layers, line types, contours, and creating surfaces in Civil 3D. Hands-on permitting experience, including plan and profile permitting and familiarity with general local permit requirements. Ability to perform permitting research and identify applicable permitting requirements and sources. Ability to pass a math and measurement assessment, demonstrating strong numerical and spatial skills. Interest or experience in design within the utility industry, such as pole construction, drafting, fielding, or engineering. Capability to decipher and work from electronic pole diagrams. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet negotiated deadlines. Valid driver's license and ability to drive a personal vehicle for fielding activities. Associate degree in design, drafting, engineering, or a closely related field (including CAD-focused associate programs). Additional Skills & Qualifications GIS Smallworld experience is a plus. Construction experience, particularly related to utility or infrastructure projects, is a plus. Experience with GIS tools and design in a utility environment is beneficial. Familiarity with overhead and underground electric utility projects is advantageous. Ability and interest in taking on a lead-type role over time, guiding more junior design technicians in plans, profiles, and permitting research. Strong attention to detail and documentation skills for inspections, testing, and facility records. Effective communication skills to coordinate with multiple departments and stakeholders. Work Environment This role offers a mix of field and office-based work. Approximately 20% of the time, and potentially up to 45% at times, involves field work, including site visits, fielding, surveys, and inspections related to overhead and underground utility lines and associated facilities. The remaining time is office-based, currently performed remotely from home for the office portion of the work. In the future, the office-based work will likely transition to an on-site office environment. The position involves regular use of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and potentially GIS Smallworld, as well as standard office and field equipment. The work focuses on utility design and permitting, with an emphasis on safety, adherence to design standards, and collaboration across departments. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Centennial, CO. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $25.00/hr.
