Job Description

T.W. Frierson Contractor, Inc. , an established and trusted name in the commercial and industrial construction industry, is looking for a Digital LayoutVDC Specialist to join our Nashville-based team. As an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company, we offer the unique opportunity to have a stake in everything you help create. Why T.W. Frierson?
Employee-Owned:
You'll be more than just a team member-you'll be an owner with a direct interest in the company's success.
Innovative Culture:
We leverage the latest in construction technology, including AR/VR, drone scanning, 4D modeling, and more.
People-First Values:
Collaboration, integrity, and growth drive every project and relationship. What You'll Do The Digital LayoutVDC Specialist owns and grows T.W. Frierson's robotic total station program. This role turns coordinated models into clean, field-ready layout data, puts points on the ground, and verifies work before it is poured, covered, or built on. Most of this role's time is dedicated to robotic total station work: pulling current models and drawings from Autodesk Construction Cloud, preparing layout files in Revit, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D, loading them directly to Leica data collectors running iCON build and iCON site, and running the Leica iCR70 for field layout and as-built verification. The remaining time supports concrete BIM model development and coordination, along with general VDC project efforts. This is not a maintain-the-status-quo role. The Digital LayoutVDC Specialist is expected to write the company's layout standards, train field teams, identify new uses for the tool, and serve as its internal champion. Core Responsibilities Robotic Total Station -
Digital Preparation:
Pull current models and drawings from Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC); confirm revision, issue status, and RFI/ASI impacts before building any layout file. Clean and prepare layout data in Revit, AutoCAD, and Civil 3
D:
extract points, grids, sleeves, embeds, anchor bolts, hangers, penetrations, curbs, and slab edges.
Build and maintain project control:
establish coordinate systems, tie building grids to site control, and manage control point files. Format and export files (DXF, IFC, point files) for direct load into Leica iCON build and iCON site on the data collector. Run a QC check on every layout file before it goes to the field.
Field Layout:
Set up and run the Leica iCR70 and data collectors: resection/free station, check shots, and point layout. Lay out grids, walls, embeds, sleeves, inserts, penetrations, and hanger locations ahead of trade work. Support superintendents and foremen with layout scheduling so data is ready before the crew needs it.
As-BuiltQuality Control:
Shoot as-built positions of embeds, anchor bolts, sleeves, and underground/in-slab utilities before pours and backfill. Compare as-built data against the model; flag deviations to the project manager and superintendent with a clear go/no-go before major activities. Deliver as-built data back into the model and ACC for closeout and owner turnover.
Program OwnershipGrowth:
Write and maintain standard workflows: file naming, prep checklists, field procedures, and QC sign-off. Train superintendents, field engineers, and foremen to run the robotic total station for routine layout; provide ongoing coaching.
Maintain equipment:
calibration, firmware and software updates, licenses, and inventory. Track results (hours saved, rework avoided, layout accuracy) and report to the Construction Technology Leader. Identify new uses for the tool and pilot them on live projects.
Act as the internal champion:
present wins, run lunch-and-learns, and help project teams plan robotic total station use during preconstruction.
Concrete BIM ModelingCoordination:
Build and maintain concrete models in
Revit:
foundations, grade beams, slabs on grade, elevated slabs, walls, columns, and slab edges. Model and coordinate embeds, sleeves, blockouts, penetrations, depressions, and pour breaks. Coordinate concrete with structural steel, MEP, and underground utilities; resolve conflicts before they reach the field. Produce pour plans, slab edge and embed plans, and quantity takeoffs to support estimating, scheduling, and procurement. Keep the concrete model tied to layout so what gets modeled is what gets shot and verified.
VDC Project Support:
Participate in trade coordination meetings; run clash detection and track issues to resolution in ACC. Help manage model federation, file structure, and permissions in ACC. Support preconstruction with model-based quantities, logistics views, and constructability reviews. Contribute to company VDC standards, templates, and project VDC execution plans. Support other technology efforts as assigned by the Construction Technology Leader.
Travel Requirements:
Frequent travel to project sites within Middle Tennessee; field time varies with project schedule. Travel to out-of-state project sites, which may require overnight stays. Valid driver's license required.
What We're Looking For EducationExperience:
Associate or bachelor's degree in construction management, Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred 3+ years' operating robotic total stations for building construction layout (general contractor, concrete, MEP, or layout services firm). 2+ years preparing layout data from design models and CAD files for field use. Hands-on concrete construction or concrete modeling experience. OSHA 10 certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days.
Expert in:
Leica iCR70 (or comparable Leica robotic total station), Leica data collectors, iCON build, iCON site.
Proficient in:
Revit, AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud (Docs, Model Coordination, Issues), Leica iCON office and data transfer workflows.
Working knowledge of:
Civil 3D (surfaces, alignments, site control, coordinate systems).
Strong survey fundamentals:
control, coordinate systems, tolerances, and error checking. Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, MEP, and civil drawings. Familiarity with (preferred): Navisworks, laser scanning and point clouds, GNSS rovers; Leica training or certification. Ability to work Monday through Friday, at least eight hours per day, five days per week between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with early starts as needed to meet pour and layout windows.
