General Motors The Safety Assurance for Effective Autonomous Driving Software (SAFEADS) department is part of GM's Global Product Safety, System, and Certification (GPSSC) organization. Our mission is to help GM deliver trusted automated driving products. As the central authority for automated driving system (ADS) safety, SAFE-ADS brings together experts from across the company to develop and maintain a comprehensive safety case including safety performance indicators for GM's automated driving technologies. GM's vision is zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion—and autonomous vehicle safety is essential to achieving that vision The Role At General Motors, we are shaping the future of mobility through cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology. Safety is at the core of everything we do - and as a member of the AV Operations and Human Factors Safety Strategy team, you will play a pivotal role in that commitment. This position offers the opportunity to support the safety strategy and execution across the entire lifecycle of AV operations, from development and supervised driving to commercial launch and post-launch continuous improvement. You will provide critical safety analyses and requirements, lead issue resolution, conduct operations process audits, and collaborate across engineering, product, and operations teams to uphold the highest standards of safety. What You'll Do Conduct operational safety analysis for manual, supervised, and autonomous driving modes Define operational safety requirements and collaborate with key stakeholders such as Operations, Software, Hardware, and Legal teams to ensure proper implementation and validation Lead or support studies to corroborate safety analysis conclusions with empirical data, document findings, and provide clear conclusions and recommendations Lead operations safety issue management to address emerging issues through thorough investigation and resolution Ensure evidence for operations safety relevant safety case claims is documented and complete Perform regular audits of autonomous vehicle operations processes, such as driver monitoring system alert response and incident response Identify and document audit findings, including procedural non-conformances, safety concerns, or areas for continuous improvement, and provide timely feedback to auditees that is clear, concise, and actionable Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field 5+ years of experience in systems safety, operational safety, field safety or related technical roles 3+ years of experience in automated technology development, testing, or deployment Demonstrated experience with safety hazard analysis and safety risk management Experience with problem resolution/issue management, including root cause analysis and corrective and preventative action (CAPA) Ability to proactively identify gaps, drive continuous improvement, and initiate the necessary actions needed to achieve high-quality work products Strong understanding of vehicle systems and automotive technology Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, using simple, objective, and concise language What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) Experience in automotive or transportation safety Familiarity with operational processes, especially in a scaled, complex environment Ability to anticipate emerging safety challenges in complex systems and proactively design solutions Effective in cross-functional collaboration to accomplish objectives, while demonstrating awareness and sensitivity to the needs and priorities of others At GM, we don't just build vehicles - we design safer, smarter ways for people to move.
