Technical Engineer
Job Description
Overview Hose-McCann Communications is seeking a hands-on Technical Engineer to design, configure, integrate, test, and document networked communication systems. This position requires practical experience with Ethernet networking, VoIP/SIP platforms, system hardware, and engineering documentation. The Technical Engineer will own assigned technical work from requirements review through configuration, verification, troubleshooting, and release, while collaborating with engineering, production, quality, and project teams to ensure reliable project execution. Key Responsibilities
- Configure and validate managed network switches, including VLANs, trunks, access ports, link aggregation, IP addressing, and basic routing parameters.
- Engineer and provision VoIP phones, SIP gateways, PBX interfaces, and related communication devices in accordance with project requirements.
- Perform system integration, bench testing, functional verification, fault isolation, and root-cause troubleshooting before equipment deployment.
- Develop formal test plans, procedures, acceptance criteria, test records, and corrective-action documentation.
- Create and maintain configuration baselines, wiring diagrams, interface definitions, bills of material, technical notes, and as-built records.
- Produce and review user manuals, installation instructions, maintenance procedures, and engineering work instructions.
- Interpret technical requirements, drawings, specifications, and customer documentation; identify technical risks, conflicts, and missing information.
- Support electrical and mechanical integration activities, including cable and connector selection, terminations, rack layouts, equipment mounting, labeling, and assembly verification.
- Apply engineering change control and configuration-management practices to hardware, software, drawings, and project records.
- Coordinate with engineering, production, quality, project management, vendors, and customers to resolve technical issues and meet project milestones.
- Develop standardized configurations, reusable test methods, and process improvements that increase quality, repeatability, and efficiency.
- Provide technical support during staging, installation, commissioning, customer acceptance testing, and post-deployment troubleshooting. Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, engineering technology, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- Working knowledge of Ethernet networking, including VLANs, IPv4 addressing, subnetting, DHCP, switching, and common troubleshooting methods.
- Working knowledge of VoIP and SIP concepts, device provisioning, call routing, gateways, and analog/digital interfaces.
- Ability to read and develop wiring diagrams, interconnection drawings, rack layouts, and technical specifications.
- Experience using network and electrical test tools to capture data, verify performance, and isolate faults.
- Ability to develop clear, controlled, and technically accurate engineering documentation.
- Strong analytical troubleshooting skills with the ability to independently investigate issues and document conclusions.
- Strong attention to detail, configuration control, and verification of technical data.
- Ability to manage multiple technical assignments, priorities, and project deadlines.
- Professional communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, production, quality, and project teams. Preferred Experience
- Hands-on configuration experience with Cisco, HPE Aruba, or comparable managed switching and routing platforms.
- Experience with SIP phones, VoIP gateways, PBX systems, packet-capture tools, and network test equipment.
- Experience integrating communication equipment in laboratory, industrial, marine, defense, or other mission-critical environments.
- Experience developing test procedures, technical manuals, engineering drawings, or configuration-control records.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Microsoft Visio, or similar engineering documentation tools.
- Familiarity with regulated quality systems, customer acceptance testing, cybersecurity requirements, or controlled technical data.
Pay:
