UK Home Office Job Summary and Description:

This is a Technical Leader position for an Engineer to support R D projects related to EMT Studies & Power System Analysis. The candidate will be responsible for leading and executing advanced electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies to support the planning, design, integration, and operation of electric power systems. This role provides technical expertise in transient analysis, inverter-based resource integration, system stability, and grid reliability assessments for transmission networks. The position requires strong analytical capabilities, advanced modeling expertise, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, utilities, consultants, and regulatory stakeholders. The candidate will conduct research in complex, high impact technical or scientific fields.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The candidate must be able to: Conduct detailed EMT simulations and studies for transmission systems using industry-standard software tools. Develop and validate models for inverter-based resources, renewable energy systems, HVDC systems, FACTS devices, and protection/control systems.

Perform:

Transient overvoltage analysis Insulation coordination studies Switching transient analysis Harmonic and resonance studies Fault and dynamic system performance evaluations Grid interconnection assessments Analyze system disturbances and provide mitigation recommendations to improve reliability and stability. Support renewable integration studies involving solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and islanded systems. Review and interpret utility interconnection requirements, and applicable industry guidelines. Prepare technical reports, presentations, and engineering documentation for clients and stakeholders. Lead technical discussions with utilities, project developers, OEMs, and regulatory agencies. Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on EMT modeling and analysis methodologies. Support proposal development and business development initiatives as needed., Familiarity with generic models of inverters and loads Strong experience conducting EMT studies in utility-scale power systems. Strong proficiency with one or more of the following software tools:

PSCAD, EMTP, RTDS, PSS

®E, and PowerFactory Strong understanding of Power system dynamics, Inverter-based resources (IBRs), Protection and controls, Power electronics, Grid code compliance Experience interpreting utility and ISO interconnection requirements. Strong technical writing and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively. Develops technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Have the potential to lead research initiatives in electromagnetics transient phenomena, focusing on renewables such as wind and solar energy systems and load.

Qualifications:

PhD in Electrical Engineering (preferred)

Ideal Candidate:

Electrical engineer with PhD degree with emphasis on power systems Strong experience with control system theory and analysis Familiarity with wind/solar inverter modeling and simulation will be considered a plus Strong experience with electromagnetic transient simulation tools (preferably PSCAD, EMTP, PowerFactory) Strong experience with electromechanical dynamics simulation tools (preferably PSS/E and PSLF) Strong programming skills (preferably in Python and Matlab) Strong technical writing and presentation skills EPRI is committed to complying with the regulatory framework governing export control, consisting of international treaties, U.S. laws, regulations and trade sanctions, and where applicable, foreign laws governing export control.
