Job Title:
BESS Principal Engineer Job Description The BESS Principal Engineer plans, designs, and executes large-scale energy storage projects, with a focus on battery energy storage systems (BESS). This role leads the exploration of technical solutions, defines project scope, and provides engineering oversight and consulting across cross-functional teams to deliver best-in-class energy storage products. The successful candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong project management capabilities and brings relevant experience in the energy storage field, particularly in solar and battery storage applications. Responsibilities Lead the design phase and engineer major components for large-scale energy storage projects, ensuring technical robustness and alignment with project objectives. Review and interpret engineering drawings, identify inconsistencies, and implement corrective actions to improve design quality and efficiency. Identify and resolve errors in engineering studies, perform root cause analysis, and recommend future design and process improvements. Prepare detailed technical scopes of work for engineering and construction contracts to support procurement and execution. Support projects from inception through completion by working closely with project managers and other stakeholders to meet schedule and performance targets. Influence and guide project teams on engineering tasks, providing technical leadership and direction across disciplines. Monitor project progress and technical issues, communicating status updates and ensuring timely resolution of engineering challenges. Manage and track project milestones, identify technical and schedule risks, and propose mitigation strategies. Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to integrate major equipment into project designs, ensuring compatibility and performance requirements are met. Work with diverse, cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, enhance project opportunities, and integrate systems and controls effectively. Interpret and apply specifications for major equipment purchasing, ensure clear technical communication with internal and external stakeholders, and propose optimized solutions. Understand permitting requirements for energy storage projects, propose solutions to legal and regulatory challenges, and recommend improvements to site design to support compliance. Perform additional engineering and project-related duties as assigned to support successful project delivery. Travel up to approximately 25% of the time to project sites and offices for project-specific duties, coordination, and reviews. Essential Skills Minimum of 3 years of experience in solar or photovoltaic (PV) engineering and/or construction. Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: power electronics, battery storage system design, substation design, or generation tie design. Strong experience in planning, designing, and executing energy storage projects, including battery energy storage systems (BESS). Ability to independently handle specialized technical tasks and make sound engineering decisions with limited supervision. Proven experience providing engineering oversight and consulting across cross-functional project teams. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences. Solid project management capabilities, including milestone management, risk identification, and coordination with project managers and stakeholders. Additional Skills & Qualifications Familiarity with energy storage technologies, including various battery chemistries, power conversion units, and DC/DC converters. Familiarity with lithium-ion battery storage safety standards such asUL1973, UL9540, NFPA 855, NFPA
70E, NEC, and applicable IFC/IBC sections. Familiarity with IEC standards relevant to energy storage and electrical systems. Experience working with major equipment suppliers and integrating their products into complex energy projects. Experience working on permitting processes and addressing legal and regulatory considerations for energy storage projects. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify improvement opportunities and propose practical technical solutions. Comfort working in a corporate environment and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, construction, and operations. Willingness and ability to travel for project-related activities, including site visits and in-office collaboration. Work Environment This role operates primarily in a corporate environment with a focus on large-scale energy storage and solar-related projects. The preferred work location is Juno Beach, with the option for remote work for highly qualified candidates who are willing to travel more frequently for in-office visits and project needs. The position involves regular collaboration with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and project stakeholders, using modern engineering tools and communication platforms. Travel of approximately 25% is required for project site visits, technical reviews, and coordination meetings, with a potentially higher travel commitment for remote employees to support in-office collaboration. The work setting emphasizes professional attire, structured project processes, and a strong focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and high-quality engineering standards. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Juno Beach, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $65.00 - $70.00/hr.
