Salary Range:
$114,390 - $169,298Job Summary The Health Engineer Director is a senior leadership role charged with designing, implementing, and maintaining robust environmental, health, and safety policies and programs across the agency. The director is responsible for ensuring full compliance with federal and state regulations while proactively managing risks, enhancing safety culture, and driving sustainability initiatives. This classification serves as a strategic advisor to executive leadership, orchestrating cross-functional efforts between engineering, operations, human resources, and legal sections to foster a safe and environmentally responsible working environment.

Primary Responsibilities Develop and implement the organization's overall environmental, health, and safety strategy, ensuring it aligns with agency objectives and regulatory requirements. Advise senior leadership on emerging trends, opportunities for innovation, and risk management practices related to environmental, health, and safety concerns. Oversee the design and execution of comprehensive environmental, health, and safety programs, policies, and procedures that promote a culture of safety and regulatory compliance. Ensure adherence to industry-specific standards and guidelines (e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Environmental Protection Agency) by conducting regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments. Lead, mentor, and manage a varied team of environmental, health, and safety engineers and specialists, setting clear goals and expectations while fostering professional development. Collaborate across sections (operations, engineering, quality assurance, human resources) to integrate best practices into all facets of business operations. Direct proactive risk assessments, distress calls, and incident investigations, ensuring timely resolution and implementing corrective action measures. Champion initiatives geared toward hazard identification, process improvement, and continuous risk mitigation. Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory authorities, industry groups, and external consultants to maintain up-to-date compliance and best practices. Communicate environmental, health, and safety performance metrics, initiatives, and objectives through detailed reports and presentations to internal and external personnel. Guide the development of environmental sustainability programs, addressing resource management, waste reduction, and emissions control. Evaluate and recommend technologies and practices that enhance environmental performance and drive long-term cost efficiencies.

Knowledge and Skills Ability to integrate technical expertise with strategic planning to drive long-term improvement initiatives. Exceptional leadership skills with experience in mentoring teams and managing cross-functional projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling clear presentation of complex environmental, health, and safety topics to varied audiences, including executive leadership and regulatory bodies. In-depth understanding of applicable environmental and safety regulations and the ability to translate these into actionable policy and practice. Strong analytical skills to assess risks, troubleshoot problems, and make informed, data-driven decisions.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license as issued by the appropriate state licensing board. Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in environmental, health, and safety engineering roles, with a proven track record in managing large-scale environmental, health, and safety programs, including 3 years of supervisory experience. Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with regulatory compliance (e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, local environmental regulations) and environmental, health, and safety best practices. Proven capability in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and implementing continuous improvement processes in high-stakes operational settings. Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or relevant environmental certifications may be required.
