Full Job Description Essential Functions:
The Vice President, Construction provides leadership to a given geographical area of work or grouping of projects. The individual in this position will be a key participant in determining any long-term regional strategies affecting the future of the organization, including those that will maximize its competitiveness, its ability to attract and retain superior talent, and the Company's financial stability. The position will report to the Company's President.
Responsibilities:
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following; however, other duties may be assigned. Managing Safety Knows, practices, and enforces the Company safety policy and procedures; models and reinforces safety as the top priority across all assigned projects and teams. Proactively motivates the GM and project staff to advocate for project safety; maintains visible safety leadership presence in the field. Ensures Project Directors and Project Managers on assigned projects are running safe operations and take appropriate action, including disciplinary action, when adequate safety measures have not been taken. Develops and approves safety incentive programs for projects as appropriate; monitors how safety issues are identified and managed across the division. Strategic Leadership Assists in developing the future course [vision] of the business group, communicates that vision, and provides those involved with the resources and support necessary to accomplish it. Assumes a leadership role in the Company's annual Strategic Planning process, and follows through with any necessary actions to ensure the successful achievement of all stated goals. Provides key support and input in the development and implementation of Company systems, policies and procedures. Works with corporate leadership to develop the necessary growth and profit projections and budgets as part of the yearly goal setting process. Project Oversight and Operational Excellence Establishes project team objectives and performance standards as defined by Company goals, financial objectives and policies and procedures. Provides all required support to project teams, monitors their progress, and makes timely adjustments whenever needed. Oversee the Project Turnover process to make sure a smooth and informative transition is accomplished. Oversee project teams in making sure the Project Closeout process is performed according to Company policies and procedures. Assumes a pivotal role in making sure project teams receive the proper support from all departments. Supports all cost engineering needs of project teams and provides appropriate input. Monitors the management and progress of projects; intervenes as necessary to keep projects meeting client needs, on schedule, and within budget. Provide advice and support to the project management team throughout a project, filling any gap between what is required to manage the project successfully and the capability of the project management team. Maintains a \"Management by Walking Around\" style of leadership. Managing Quality Ensures projects comply with environmental, safety and other regulatory requirements; remains informed on how quality and compliance issues are identified and managed across the division. Ensures projects comply with the Company's Quality Management procedures. Estimating and Business Development Collaborates closely with the Chief Estimator and VP, Business Development to provide operational input and support in the preparation and review of estimates, proposals, and pursuit strategies. Works closely with Business Development to provide the necessary Operations input and support, including client contacts, participating in presentations, preparing proposals, and other related activities. Stays attuned to the marketplace and upcoming work; maintains key client relationships and supports Business Development in identifying and pursuing growth opportunities. Financial Management Monitors G&A expenses of the business group for appropriateness and adherence to pre-determined budgets. Ensures projects are planned, scheduled and managed, including billing and collections, closely in order to achieve favorable financial results. Ensures risks on the project are anticipated and actively managed, including safety, insurance, compliance with regulatory requirements, and financial exposure. People Leadership Be a key supporter of and participant in all necessary employee recruitment, retention and training initiatives, and make sure project team members do the same, where appropriate. Supports Human Resources to ensure the proper orientation and training of all new team members. Promotes a strong, positive working relationship among all project team members and Company department personnel. Develops a skilled and motivated workforce committed to a future with the Company; actively develops the capabilities of the GM and project management team. Subcontractor and Supplier Relationships Develops and maintains positive and trusting working relationships with key subcontractors and suppliers on assigned projects; ensures subcontractors and suppliers view Filanc as a contractor of choice. Advises and counsels the project management team on subcontractor and supplier relationships and issues; intervene as necessary to keep projects on track and relationships constructive. Fulfill MBE/DBE requirements across all assigned projects. Dispute Resolution When necessary, be directly involved in resolving disputes to minimize their negative effect on the Company and its personnel. Assist and advise Project Managers in preventing and managing construction claims. Skills & Qualifications A strong understanding of multiple-project management techniques with a minimum of 10 years of heavy mechanical contracting experience. Understands the various elements of new work business, including alternative delivery methods. Knowledge of finance and management policies, procedures and techniques. A four-year engineering degree or equivalent is preferred but not required. Demonstrates a strong initiative regardless of the task at hand; is self-motivated. Handles pressure well, maintaining focus and intensity, and recovers quickly from adverse situations. Realizes the importance of team building and provides the necessary leadership to obtain complete support from all team members. Understands the importance of utilizing effective communication skills, practices its principles, and is an effective listener. Is able to make effective decisions in ambiguous situations with limited information and is recognized as an effective problem solver. Sets standards; holds self and others accountable for achieving these standards in accordance with the Company's Core Values. \"Walks the Talk\".
