Skillset Group is seeking a Senior Ball Screw Mechanical Engineer to work in either Rockford, IL or Freeland, MI. The Senior Ball Screw Design Engineer will lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of high-precision ball screw assemblies used in aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial applications. This role serves as the primary technical expert, partnering with customers, vendors, and manufacturing teams to develop innovative designs, optimize manufacturing processes, and ensure product performance and reliability. The ideal candidate has extensive ball screw design experience, a strong mechanical engineering background, and thrives in a hands-on environment with the opportunity to build and lead a growing engineering team. Pay:
$150-210K/yr.
Location:
Rockford, IL or Freeland, MI Shift:
Monday - Friday, 1 st shift, flexible start time 7am, 8am, etc.
Responsibilities:
Utilize 8+ years of ball screw design engineering experience to support high-precision mechanical systems and motion components. Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline Lead the design and development of precision ball screw (A MUST) assemblies for aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial applications. Perform advanced engineering analysis involving load distribution, fatigue life, stress, friction, thermal effects, metallurgy, thread grinding, and tight-tolerance design. Develop and optimize crossover designs, preload strategies, lubrication methods, and manufacturing processes for ball screw products. Use SolidWorks, PDM, and Epicor to support product design, documentation, and engineering workflows. Collaborate directly with customers and vendors through calls, meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions. Lead testing, validation, failure analysis, and continuous improvement efforts to ensure product reliability and performance. Serve as the primary technical expert and currently operate as a one-person engineering team with future team growth expected. Partner closely with manufacturing on machining, grinding, assembly, and quality control processes for high-precision components. Position can be based in either Rockford, IL or Freeland, MI and includes occasional travel; relocation assistance is available for the right candidate.
