Job Description

### Position Summary The Technical Project Manager drives high-velocity execution of critical, business-impacting initiatives for the Varian division of Applied Materials. This role manages a portfolio of cost reduction, resiliency, and value engineering projects, leading efforts from concept through qualification and production enablement. The TPM is responsible for creating credible project forecasts for cost savings, timing, and delivery risk, while ensuring alignment with product roadmaps and business unit priorities. This role operates as a value program leader by owning outcomes, driving accountability, and ensuring projects deliver measurable business impact. Success in this role requires strong cross-functional collaboration across engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain, as well as the ability to influence stakeholders and accelerate decision-making in a complex, matrixed organization. The individual will play a key role in integrating value programs into product strategies, driving early buy-in from business units, and ensuring disciplined execution at scale. The ideal candidate brings experience managing large, multi-threaded project portfolios in the semiconductor capital equipment industry or similarly complex manufacturing environments, with a demonstrated track record of delivering meaningful cost and operational improvements. ### Key Responsibilities
  • Define and drive product-level cost reduction, resiliency, and value engineering strategy; build and manage a credible multi-year roadmap aligned to division cost objectives.
  • Own a portfolio of value programs across implanter product lines, prioritizing initiatives based on business impact, feasibility, and resource constraints.
  • Lead end-to-end program execution from concept through qualification and production enablement, ensuring delivery against committed cost, schedule, and performance targets.
  • Develop and maintain robust cost models and forecasts; track realized savings and report performance against plan to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Integrate value initiatives into product roadmaps, driving early alignment with business units and influencing prioritization decisions.
  • Drive cross-functional execution across engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain; remove barriers, resolve conflicts, and accelerate decision-making.
  • Partner with engineering to identify design, sourcing, and specification opportunities that improve cost, manufacturability, and supply chain resilience.
  • Evaluate trade-offs across cost, risk, quality, and schedule to enable informed decision-making and ensure program success.
  • Monitor program health, including risks, dependencies, and critical path activities; proactively escalate and drive resolution of issues impacting delivery.
  • Leverage internal and external benchmarks to continuously improve value program strategy, execution rigor, and business impact. ### Functional Knowledge & Expertise
  • Deep domain expertise in product cost structure, materials, and sourcing strategies, with the ability to translate technical and supply chain insights into measurable cost and performance improvements.
  • Broad working knowledge across engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain disciplines; able to connect decisions across functions and drive aligned, system-level outcomes.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to anticipate technical, operational, and regulatory challenges and proactively adapt program strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at both a detailed and system level—understanding component-level drivers while maintaining focus on overall product and portfolio impact.
  • Applies structured, data-driven problem solving to complex, ambiguous challenges; balances analytical rigor with speed of execution. ### Leadership & Influence
  • Leads complex, high-impact programs with significant technical, operational, and business risk; drives clarity, alignment, and execution in ambiguous environments.
  • Influences cross-functional teams without direct authority, holding stakeholders accountable and driving decisions that advance program outcomes.
  • Engages and aligns stakeholders across functions and levels, including senior leadership; communicates clearly to drive understanding, prioritization, and action.
