JOB SUMMARY
This position contributes to the company Mission and Purpose by leading the product design function and supporting the design-related needs of our customers and the organization. This at-will position is responsible for leading all aspects of Engineering including product excellence, new product development, sales and service support, manufacturing support, and company culture.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the Engineering Department to achieve product excellence in the existing product line. o Ensure complete and accurate bills of material and product drawings from the engineering organization. BOM and designs to be structured within established product line hierarchies promoting re-use of parts, modularity, standardization and manufacturability. o Work closely with Product Management, Business Development, Operations, and Customer Care to ensure department deliverables are consistent with the needs of the customers and organization. o Support product training material development and training events where applicable. Lead the Engineering Department's effort related to new product design and development. o Achieve completion of new product development projects on schedule, develop design project schedules, participate in cross functional new product development management process o Ensure Department deliverables support the entire NPD process including manufacturing, part sales, technical support documentation, customer trial and business development. o Manage the resources of the department to meet the NPD requirements and seek outside engineering services when needed. Lead the Engineering Department's effort to support sales of capital equipment, part sales and service. o Review capital equipment requests for feasibility, safety, compliance with appropriate standards, adherence to regional requirements, and development time. Work closely with Product Management and Business Development Departments to develop complete understanding of functional requirements and operational benefits. o Provide supporting documentation when appropriate. o Initiate engineering research effort in support of part sales and service related to trouble shooting worldwide installed fleet. o Maintain and communicate industry technology trends for inclusion and application to Getman products and service. Support product roadmaps related to introductions where appropriate. Ensure a manufacturing orientation within the department. o Encourage on the floor learning and follow-up by design engineers, connecting their computer-based design work to the physical product results o Instill a design for manufacturing philosophy o Support manufacturing work instructions consistent with best practices and efficient production. o Direct department participation in troubleshooting design related manufacturing problems o Maintain effective participation in cost reduction initiatives Promote culture within the Engineering Department consistent with company values and direction. o Maintain a positive working relationship with Getman Corporation employees to ensure a cooperative and productive work environment. o Identify, implement, and amend as needed an organizational structure that supports a team oriented, transparent and highly skilled department culture. o Develop a highly skilled and efficient engineering team. o Promote an open, honest and respectful relationship with direct reports, peers and customers o Cultivate a departmental commitment to continuous improvement and challenging accepted practices to ensure Getman utilizes optimal designs for cost, durability, and customer satisfaction. o Create a structure of external support on which Getman can rely when additional expertise or resources are required. Achieve the following Department goals which may change from time to time but are captured in the annual and quarterly goal setting process and articulated in Performance Support Process documents. Develop and maintain a department expertise in domestic and international standards related to underground mining, mobile equipment, and related worker safety agencies. Education and/or Experience B. Sc. Degree or higher in mechanical engineering or in a related field Experience in heavy equipment, preferably mining equipment, structural and systems development and design Experience in supporting heavy equipment manufacturing, from fabrication to assembly Stage-Gate process experience for new product development Project/technical management experience in cross- functional work environment Experience in interacting with and supporting end users of machinery and their stakeholders (aftermarket) Experience of underground mining industry and machinery is preferred 10+ years of experience managing and directing other engineers or technical people Skills, Talents and/or Characteristics Good understanding of structural analysis (FEA), mobile hydraulic systems, electrical systems and machine control systems and development processes and tools Strong team leadership and people leadership skills Ability to work with peers and colleagues at all levels in the organization Read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information Getman Corporation is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
