S. Department of Defense and commercial customers. We've delivered four expeditionary-scale prototype units to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, hold an active Air Force contract (GRAPE), and have $49M in DoD funding to date. We are a small, technically dense team. The work is real. The systems we design get wet, get tested, and get shipped. The Role We are hiring an Engineering Manager to be the glue across our entire in-house engineering function
  • mechanical, electrical, and systems.
You will report to the CEO and work side-by-side with the COO/CFO. You will oversee junior engineers, partner with our senior technical leads, keep the floor and facilities operating, and make sure technology development stays on schedule across multiple DoD and commercial programs. This is not a desk-and-Gantt-chart job. We need someone who can sit down at a CAD station, read a schematic, debug a test rig, run a design review, write a status memo to a program manager, and walk the floor in the same day. You will be the senior technical adult in the room when the CEO is traveling. What You Will Do Provide day-to-day technical oversight across mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering work Coordinate engineering deliverables across multiple active programs (Volturnus production, Air Force
GRAPE, USACE
work, new pursuits) Run weekly engineering syncs, design reviews, and program status updates to the CEO Mentor and develop junior engineers; identify gaps in skills, tooling, and process Own the integrated project schedule
  • milestones, dependencies, risks
  • and surface slippage before it becomes a customer problem Partner with the COO/CFO on engineering budgets, capital equipment decisions, and vendor management Interface with DoD program managers, prime contractors, and technical consultants on behalf of the team Keep facilities, test infrastructure, and engineering tools running so the team can do real work Be technically hands-on
  • jump into CAD, schematics, test plans, or analysis when the work calls for it What You Bring BS or MS in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering (or equivalent demonstrated experience) 15+ years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years managing engineers in a product-development environment Cross-disciplinary fluency
  • you may have come up as an ME or EE, but you can hold your own in a conversation about the other discipline and the interfaces between them Track record of shipping hardware
  • not just designing it, but getting it built, tested, and into customer hands Direct experience running engineering schedules and budgets on programs of $1M+ Strong written and verbal communication
  • you can write a tight status memo and run a productive design review Maturity to manage up to a founder-CEO and across to a COO/CFO without ego, and to push back when you need to Demonstrated ability to develop junior engineers into senior ones Nice to Have DoD or federal contractor experience, ITAR familiarity Marine, subsea, hydrokinetic, or rotating-machinery experience Manufacturing or operations exposure•CNC, fabrication, supply chain PE license Direct experience with ERDC, ONR, AFWERX, or similar agencies Experience building and scaling an engineering team from sub-10 to 20+ What This Role Is Not A pure people-management role.
If you have not personally designed, built, or debugged something in the last three years, this is not the right fit. A program management role. We are not hiring a scheduler. We are hiring an engineering leader who happens to be excellent at coordination. Remote or hybrid. This role is on-site in New Brighton, MN. Compensation $180,000
