Job Description

The Bridge Bureau supports the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Districts by providing technical expertise in bridge design, construction, inspection, management and maintenance. Within the Bridge Bureau is the Bridge Design Section consisting of engineers and technicians who perform bridge design calculations; bridge plan set development for new bridges, bridge rehabilitations and bridge preservation; perform bridge inspections to develop scopes of work; management of bridge inventory; bridge load rating analyses; construction engineering support; and bridge specification writing. The Bridge Bureau is involved in every state-owned bridge in New Mexico through all stages of a bridge's life: preliminary design, final design, construction, routine inspection, bridge maintenance and rehabilitation projects, demolition, and replacement. As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government. Why does the job exist? This position exists to provide designs of bridges and structures for various transportation projects statewide, provides construction technical support for various bridge/structural projects, as well as supervise and direct other bridge/structural engineers and technicians within the Design Unit. Additional duties may include assisting with bridge inspections, bridge load ratings and assisting with mergency situations. How does it get done? The primary responsibilities of this position will include: Design, prepare, and provide bridge and structural plans for various bridge and structural projects on a statewide basis. Scope and plan out bridge and structural projects. Provide support to District offices on their bridge and structural needs. Prepare AutoCAD drawings that accurately reflect the existing site conditions and the impact of the proposed design. Review fabricator shop drawings for components of bridges and other structures under construction to verify accuracy and compliance with the contract documents. Perform miscellaneous bridge/structural related tasks as directed by the Design Section Manager and the State Bridge Engineer. Who are the customers? The NMDOT Districts and Regions, and the traveling public. Ideal Candidate The NMDOT Districts and Regions, and the traveling public. Minimum Qualification Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
