Job Description
Engineering Manager (Payments)
at Cedar USA Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S. Cedar's mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a "one-size-fits-all" approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.
The role:
As part of our continued growth and commitment to building impactful solutions, we are excited to hire an Engineering Manager to the Payment Plans squad. The Payment Plans squad is responsible for both maintaining and enhancing Cedar's core payment plans experience. Our mission is to differentiate Cedar's products and drive performance by delivering payments products that increase collections and save clients, patients, and Cedar both money and time. At Cedar, your work has a direct and meaningful impact on people's lives. This is a product engineering leadership role focused on building and evolving customer-facing functionality. Payments at Cedar are not a side feature; they are core to how patients pay and how providers get paid. Through ownership of the payment plans experience, you will play a fundamental role in making healthcare affordable and accessible for our patients. Engineering Managers at Cedar are responsible for their team's success, balancing technical leadership with people development. In this role, you will find yourself interfacing with various cross-functional stakeholders, from Product Management to our Commercial/Sales teams. You will be expected to lead through ambiguity, drive alignment where priorities are unclear, and help shape product direction in partnership with Product. You'll set and uphold a high quality bar, ensuring the team delivers polished, thoughtful products with attention to detail. You'll take ownership beyond traditional role boundaries, offering strong perspectives on technical direction, customer experience, and product strategy while fostering a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement. In this position you will:
Lead a full-stack product engineering team of 6-8 engineers, balancing technical expertise with people management. Establish an environment of trust and nurture a team culture that's empowering, supportive, and committed to engineering and product excellence. Collaborate extremely closely with partners (Product, Design, Sales, etc.) to deliver outcomes while balancing technical quality and user experience. Mentor engineers through coaching, feedback, and development plans that support personal and professional growth. Drive your team's roadmap creation and execution, working with Product to prioritize and scope work through ambiguity. Advocate for technical investments that enable future product development, partnering closely with Senior and Staff Engineers. Navigate enterprise customization and client-driven requirements, balancing near-term commitments with long-term system health. What we're looking for: 7+ years of professional full-stack software development experience. 2+ years of engineering management experience, including hiring and team-building. Commitment to growing talent through clear, thoughtful feedback and personalized development plans. Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally with stakeholders and partners, including navigating tough conversations and making hard decisions and tradeoffs. Great product taste and a history of taking complex problems and solving them elegantly. Experience working in ambiguous, fast-moving teams that have built and shipped high-quality products at scale. Comfort operating in enterprise or customization-heavy environments is a strong plus. Experience building within distributed architectures. Python expertise is preferred, but not required. Strong computer science fundamentals—a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent experience. What this role is not: This is not a pure people-manager role. Successful candidates bring strong product and technical judgment and actively partner in shaping product direction. This is not a role where Product hands down a fully formed roadmap. Engineering Managers are expected to co-own strategy and help navigate ambiguity in partnership with Product and Design. This is not a low-complexity or greenfield-only environment. The work involves enterprise constraints, customization, and real customer commitments. This is not a role for someone looking to stay narrowly scoped. Ownership, cross-functional leadership, and accountability for outcomes are core to success here. This is not a platform, infrastructure, or DevOps role. The team builds and owns customer-facing product functionality, not shared platforms or internal frameworks. This is not an internal tools or developer productivity team. While we care deeply about engineering quality, this role is focused on end-user product capabilities. Your day might look like: Engineering for scale: Evolving a system which facilitates millions of payment plans annually to serve an increasingly diverse provider and patient base. Advancing patient affordability: Partnering with clients and vendors to create financial optionality that empowers patients with choice. Curating a strong cross functional culture: Aligning technical visions to product strategy and roadmaps; challenging domain boundaries, and garnering organizational buy in. Establishing new architectural paradigms: Serving as a thought partner and technical bar raiser as you build net-new services which expand our service oriented architecture. Personalizing experiences throughAI:
Utilizing Cedar's personalization framework to optimize and guide the patient payment experience.Compensation Range and Benefits:
