Job Description
Substation Engineering Supervisor The Engineering Supervisor leads the day-to-day operations of a substation engineering department focused on electric substation projects (physical and P&C). This role establishes project budgets and schedules, oversees quality standards, and reports key metrics and status updates to program leadership and customers. The supervisor provides both technical and non-technical leadership to leads and individual contributors, ensures efficient workflows, and plays an active role in growing the business while successfully executing current projects. Responsibilities Provide strong technical leadership and training in Protection & Control Engineering to the department, including one-on-one mentorship and coaching for team leads. Establish, monitor, and maintain quality control standards for all design services, engineering standards, and deliverable products. Monitor and manage budgets and schedules for all projects and workflows using designated systems and tools. Hold teams accountable for meeting project estimates provided to customers and ensure that change orders are issued accurately and in a timely manner when scope changes occur. Ensure teams meet project schedules and deadlines, proactively identifying and addressing risks to timelines. Directly manage leads and individual contributors within the department, providing clear direction, feedback, and performance expectations. Collaborate with internal leads and customer stakeholders to refine and drive business processes that support efficient and effective workflows and workload distribution. Engage with customers to understand their needs and work closely with internal teams to ensure processes run smoothly and expectations are met. Distribute incoming workflow from the customer to internal leads and oversee allocation of work across their teams, ensuring all projects pass through the supervisor for coordination. Serve as the primary liaison with the customer to address problems, inefficiencies, and process issues, maintaining strong and transparent communication. Resolve issues related to invoicing, resourcing, and staffing to support project delivery and customer satisfaction. Facilitate resolutions to disagreements between the customer and internal team regarding processes, technical issues, and project execution. Proactively address personnel matters, including hiring, termination, promotions, demotions, attendance concerns, scheduling, and performance reviews. Use Microsoft Office and customer-specific software and applications to manage projects, track metrics, and complete daily tasks. Drive the professional development and training of the team through collaboration with leads and help identify and implement training needs and opportunities. Essential Skills Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage engineering teams in a utilities or utility services environment. Strong background in engineering supervision and engineering management within substation or utility-focused projects. Ability to establish and maintain quality control standards for engineering design services and deliverables. Proven capability to manage project budgets, schedules, and resources using designated systems or tools. Effective communication skills for interfacing with customers, resolving conflicts, and serving as a liaison between internal teams and external stakeholders. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn and use customer-specific software and applications. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. 10+ years of experience engineering and managing electric substation protection and control systems projects. 4+ years of experience leading or supervising a technical design or engineering team. Professional Engineering (PE) license, or the ability and willingness to obtain a PE license within an agreed timeframe. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Cincinnati, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.07 - $70.10/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
