JOB SUMMARY
Race Rock is seeking an accomplished Substation Steel Engineering Manager to build and lead a new Substation Steel Engineering Department within our Utility Structures Division. Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, you will define the department's engineering standards and direct all design and drafting activity for substation steel structures. This is a ground-floor leadership role for a licensed PE who wants to shape a team and a discipline from the start.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Stand up and grow the Substation Steel Engineering Department — hiring, onboarding, and developing engineering and drafting staff. Lead and mentor a team of up to five direct reports, providing performance feedback and professional development. Direct, review, and approve the design and analysis of substation steel structures up to 500 kV — tapered tubular A-frames, H-frame dead-ends, static masts, low-profile structures, bus supports, and switch stands. Oversee engineering calculations, drawing packages, and sealed deliverables. Establish department workflows, design standards, methodologies, tools, and best practices that support scalable growth. Coordinate team resources to meet project schedule, quality, and budget targets. Prepare and approve proposal packages, technical scopes, and design estimates. Partner with project management, sales, drafting, and manufacturing teams, and serve as the department's technical lead with utilities, consultants, and EPC partners.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis. Active Professional Engineer (PE) license — Texas preferred, or obtainable by reciprocity within six months. 8+ years of high-voltage substation steel design experience. Expert knowledge of
ASCE 113, AISC 360, ASCE
7, and ASCE 48. Proficiency with STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, and RISAConnection. Experience with structural steel detailing, bolted and welded connection design, and fabrication-drawing interpretation. Demonstrated ability to develop engineering standards and workflows and to mentor junior staff. Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Structural Engineering. 2+ years of engineering management or technical leadership experience. Working knowledge of PLS-POLE, Mathcad Prime, and
