Our focus is on wet side mechanical building systems, including general plumbing, steam heating, hydronics, and fire protection. As a design/build firm, we provide solutions for projects of all stages - from early design and development to construction and operations. We are seeking to fill an Assistant Mechanical Designer position on our design team in Dublin, CA. The Assistant Mechanical Designer will support our senior engineers and design team in creating accurate, constructible models and shop drawings for our commercial mechanical and fire protection projects. This role directly contributes to project success by utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) and drafting software to route piping, layout sprinkler systems, identify spatial clashes, and prepare field-ready drawings. Ultimately, the Assistant Mechanical Designer will help bridge the gap between conceptual engineering and physical construction, ensuring our field crews have clear, code-compliant plans to build from safely and efficiently. All positions available include competitive pay and benefits package.
Job Responsibilities:
Assist in drafting and 3D modeling of plumbing, hydronic, steam, and fire protection systems (including sprinkler head layouts, fire pumps, and standpipes) using AutoCAD MEP, Revit, or specialized fire protection software. Produce detailed layout drawings, fabrication spools, and installation shop drawings for field crews. Help ensure that mechanical and fire protection designs adhere to project specifications, local fire marshal requirements, and NFPA standards. Assist in BIM coordination and clash detection (using Navisworks or similar) to resolve spatial conflicts with structural, electrical, and dry-side HVAC systems before construction begins. Perform basic engineering and design calculations (e.g., pipe sizing, pump head calculations, hydraulic calculations for sprinklers) under the guidance of a Senior Designer or Professional Engineer (PE). Conduct field surveys and job site walk-throughs to measure and verify existing conditions, incorporating field data into the design models. Assist in updating and maintaining "as-built" (record) drawings throughout the lifecycle of the project. Help compile engineering submittals, equipment schedules, and respond to design-related RFIs. Collaborate closely with estimators, project managers, and field superintendents to ensure designs are constructible, code-compliant, and cost-effective.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Drafting/Design, or a related field (or equivalent technical training). 1-3 years of experience in mechanical drafting, design, or BIM coordination (relevant internships count). Strong proficiency in Autodesk software, specifically AutoCAD and Revit (experience with AutoSPRINK or HydraCAD is a plus). Familiarity with Navisworks, Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Office Suite. Basic understanding of wet side mechanical building systems and fire protection components. Familiarity with or willingness to learn the California Plumbing Code (CPC), California Mechanical Code (CMC), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes (specifically NFPA 13, 14, and 20). Strong spatial reasoning, mathematical skills, and a high attention to detail. Ability to read and interpret complex architectural, structural, and electrical blueprints. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Valid driver's license, as occasional travel to local job sites for field measurements is required.
