Chief Engineer Job Description The Chief Engineer leads facility maintenance operations in a commercial and industrial environment, overseeing a maintenance team and ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems. This role manages preventive maintenance programs, drives compliance with OSHA and NEC standards, and provides hands-on technical expertise in troubleshooting, repair, and installation activities. Responsibilities Lead and supervise a maintenance team responsible for facility operations in a commercial and industrial setting. Oversee the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, electrical (up to 600V), mechanical, and plumbing systems. Plan, schedule, and manage preventive maintenance programs for building systems, including HVAC, boilers, and cooling towers. Perform advanced electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics on equipment and systems, ensuring timely resolution of issues. Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support installation, repair, and modification of building systems. Coordinate and execute installation and repair work, including HVAC components, piping (such as PVC), mechanical equipment, and related infrastructure. Ensure compliance with OSHA, NEC, and other applicable safety and regulatory standards in all maintenance activities. Monitor system performance, identify potential problems, and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime and extend equipment life. Collaborate with other departments and contractors to support construction, renovation, and facilities improvement projects. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and equipment histories. Promote a strong safety culture by enforcing safe work practices and conducting regular inspections of the work area and equipment. Train, mentor, and develop maintenance team members, fostering technical growth and consistent performance. Troubleshoot and resolve issues with boilers, cooling towers, and other critical building infrastructure. Support the installation and maintenance of HVAC systems, including HVAC maintenance routines and system optimization. Ensure facilities remain in good working order through proactive facilities maintenance and timely response to service requests. Essential Skills Minimum of 7+ years of facility experience in a commercial or industrial environment. Strong HVAC or electrical experience, including hands-on troubleshooting and repair. Proven leadership experience managing maintenance teams and leading day-to-day operations. Demonstrated expertise in building maintenance and facilities maintenance practices. Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems up to 600V safely and effectively. Experience with HVAC maintenance, including boilers, cooling towers, and related systems. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation. Solid mechanical aptitude for repair, installation, and maintenance of building systems. Working knowledge of OSHA and NEC standards and their application in facility operations. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex maintenance issues. Effective communication skills to coordinate with team members, contractors, and other stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced facilities environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with plumbing systems and repairs within commercial or industrial facilities. Experience in construction-related activities as they relate to facilities improvements and upgrades. Hands-on experience with installation of piping, including PVC and other materials. Familiarity with preventive maintenance planning tools and maintenance record-keeping. Experience working with a variety of mechanical systems and building infrastructure components. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Detroit, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $38.00/hr.
