Lyons H.T. Lyons is a full-service design-build contractor serving customers across a range of industries throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. As part of
EQUANS MEP
Services Northeast, we combine engineering, construction, Virtual Design & Construction (VDC), and energy-services capabilities to solve complex building-system challenges and deliver practical, constructible solutions. Our engineers work closely with clients, account managers, estimators, project managers, field teams, designers, and certified balancers. This integrated approach gives our engineers direct visibility into how designs are estimated, coordinated, built, commissioned, and operated. The Opportunity H.T. Lyons is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead the engineering and design effort for mechanical and plumbing projects. This role is well suited for an experienced engineer who enjoys owning projects, working directly with clients, mentoring developing staff, and turning field conditions and project goals into coordinated, code-compliant, construction-ready solutions. The Senior Engineer will be accountable for technical quality, project execution, and day-to-day engineering coordination on assigned work. The successful candidate will balance sound engineering judgment with clear communication, constructability, and a collaborative design-build mindset. What You Will Do
- Lead mechanical and plumbing engineering and design activities for assigned projects from early planning through construction support.
- Develop system concepts, design criteria, calculations, equipment selections, specifications, and permit and construction documents.
- Manage engineering scope, schedule, budget, priorities, and day-to-day communication for assigned projects.
- Coordinate directly with clients and internal partners, including account managers, estimators, project managers, VDC, construction teams, designers, and other engineering disciplines.
- Perform site surveys, document existing conditions, evaluate building systems, and troubleshoot operational or performance issues.
- Prepare clear technical reports and engineering studies, including condition assessments, feasibility evaluations, and energy audits.
- Apply applicable building codes, energy codes, industry standards, and sound engineering practices to produce accurate and complete deliverables.
- Review designs for technical accuracy, coordination, constructability, maintainability, and alignment with project requirements.
- Delegate work and provide technical direction, review, and mentorship to junior engineers, designers, modelers/drafters, and interns.
- Participate in client meetings, design reviews, coordination meetings, and construction-phase discussions.
- Respond to questions during estimating, permitting, procurement, construction, startup, and closeout.
- Collaborate across teams, share lessons learned, and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards and workflows. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
- At least four (4) years of relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of building codes and standards applicable to mechanical and plumbing design.
- Experience with several of the following systems: Mechanical/HVAC, plumbing, energy, refrigeration, controls, central plants, and industrial & process systems.
- Proficiency with load calculation software
- Ability to develop and review engineering calculations, equipment selections, specifications, and construction drawings.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate clearly with clients, vendors, and construction teams.
- Strong written communication, organization, professional judgment, and team-leadership skills. Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Professional Engineer or actively progressing toward professional licensure.
- Experience leading engineering work for commercial, institutional, manufacturing, life sciences, healthcare, industrial, or similar building projects.
- Experience in a design-build, contractor-led, or highly collaborative project-delivery environment.
- Knowledge of construction cost estimating or high-level budgeting strategies
- Proficiency with Revit 3D modeling and/or 2D AutoCAD drafting
- Familiarity with Autodesk and Microsoft 365 software
- Experience mentoring junior technical staff and coordinating multidisciplinary deliverables. What Success Looks Like
- Engineering deliverables are accurate, coordinated, constructible, and on-time.
- Clients and internal teams receive timely, clear, and practical technical guidance.
- Project risks, design conflicts, scope gaps, and schedule concerns are identified early and addressed collaboratively.
- Junior team members receive effective direction, feedback, and opportunities to grow.
- Design decisions reflect both engineering requirements and real-world installation, operation, and maintenance considerations. Why Join H.T. Lyons
- Work on complex projects where sales, engineering, BIM, estimating, procurement, construction, commissioning, and energy expertise are connected.
- See designs progress from concept through installation and operation.
- Build direct relationships with clients and project-delivery teams.
- Help develop the next generation of engineers and designers.
- Contribute to practical solutions that improve building performance and project outcomes.
Application Information Candidates are encouraged to apply even if their experience does not align with every preferred qualification. H.T. Lyons values relevant experience, sound judgment, collaboration, and a willingness to continue developing technical and leadership skills.
