Job Description

Job Title:
Facilities Engineer This Facilities Engineer role leads the development and management of requirements for new government-aligned industrial facilities that support defense and aerospace programs. You will define the technical and operational needs of future facilities, ensure alignment with government standards, and drive those requirements through design, planning, and eventual construction over multi-year programs. Acting as a key technical liaison, you will bridge the gap between conceptual facility needs and executable construction plans so that the organization is fully prepared for a seamless build once construction begins in approximately two years. The position requires a strong experience in facilities engineering within government, GOCO, or other controlled-environment contexts and offers the opportunity to directly influence facility performance, operational efficiency, and mission readiness. Responsibilities Lead the development, documentation, and management of facility requirements for new industrial and government-aligned facilities, from early concept through design and construction. Drive improvements in facility operations, maintenance programs, and real property management to enhance reliability and efficiency. Provide technical recommendations to optimize manufacturing operations, reduce costs, and improve overall operational efficiency. Apply project management principles to facility-related projects, including planning, scheduling, estimating, and coordination across multiple stakeholders. Oversee contractor-executed planning, development, maintenance, and real property disposition activities to ensure alignment with project goals. Evaluate contractor performance against cost, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements and provide clear feedback and direction. Conduct facility inspections, engineering analyses, and operational studies to identify issues and improvement opportunities. Identify operational risks related to facilities and infrastructure and recommend corrective and preventive actions. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local real property policies, regulations, easements, permitting requirements, and land-use agreements. Coordinate closely with client teams, general contractors, architects, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders to align technical requirements and resolve issues. Participate in design reviews and provide engineering input on mechanical systems, building systems, and constructability. Prepare and deliver clear engineering reports, technical assessments, and presentations for internal and external audiences. Represent the organization in client meetings, program reviews, and technical discussions, serving as a trusted technical advisor. Support multiple Department of Defense projects focused on new industrial facility construction at DoD installations, typically with 2-3 year durations. Contribute to continuous improvement of facility engineering processes, standards, and best practices within a collaborative, consulting environment. Essential Skills At least 7+ years of experience as a Facilities Engineer, Mechanical Designer, or Mechanical Engineer within a GOCO (Government-Owned, Contractor-Operated) or U.S. Government facility. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, with preference for licensure in MI or OH. Demonstrated experience working on industrial, manufacturing, or government projects from initial concept through detailed design. Hands-on experience with mechanical building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, piping, and controls and automation. Proven capability in developing, defining, and managing facility requirements for new facilities, including greenfield projects built from scratch. Demonstrated experience managing facility and system requirements through construction, including oversight of contractors in engineering consulting or client-facing technical roles. Experience working directly with general contractors, architects, owners, and subcontractors, including subcontractor management and stakeholder coordination. Experience evaluating contractor performance against cost, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements. Strong understanding of real property regulations, easements, permitting, and land-use agreements. Experience in facilities operations, real property management, and facility maintenance programs. Experience in program or project management related to facility or construction projects, including scheduling, estimating, and quality control. Experience with design review, construction oversight, and risk management in a government or controlled-environment context. Ability to prepare clear engineering reports, assessments, and technical presentations for diverse audiences. Strong stakeholder management, communication, and coordination skills in a client-focused environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly valued and preferred, particularly in Michigan or Ohio. Mechanical design experience for buildings, including industrial or manufacturing facilities. Experience as a Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Designer within an architecture and engineering (A+E) firm or similar consulting environment. Experience with construction management practices, including oversight of general contractors and subcontractors. Familiarity with government contracts and Department of Defense installation projects. Exposure to electrical systems in the context of facility and construction projects. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify operational risks and recommend effective corrective actions. Ability to thrive in a collaborative, client-focused consulting environment and build strong relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Motivation to work with leading defense and aerospace clients on complex, high-impact facility projects. Interest in having a direct impact on facility performance and operational efficiency across multi-year programs. Work Environment The role supports multiple Department of Defense projects focused on new industrial facility construction at DoD installations, typically running 2-3 years each. The position is open to remote candidates. For those local to the primary office, the typical arrangement is approximately 75% office-based work and 25% travel. Travel will be to client job sites across the United States and may be short-term or long-term, so flexibility is important. The average workload is around 45 hours per week, with the possibility of increasing up to approximately 60 hours during peak project periods. Standard working hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some flexibility based on project needs. You will collaborate closely with project managers and other facilities engineers in a professional, consulting-oriented environment that emphasizes client service, technical excellence, and teamwork.
