Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

General Engineering Tech I:

 Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements,extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities. Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results. Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards. Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensurecontractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plansand specifications. Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications fordevices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Monitors and/or maintains construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding EqualEmployment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the DisadvantagedBusiness Enterprise programs. Operates light and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment. Researches plan sets and reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supportingdocuments for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures anddesign guidelines. Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitorslane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the PublicInformation Officer. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. General Engineering Tech II all the above and: Consults with contractors' superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilizationdata and time/cost estimates. Serves as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for large and/or complex construction projectsor for multiple district construction projects.
