Job Description

Deployment Engineer - Chicago (IL) Deployment Engineer - Chicago (IL) About us At Gideon, we're transforming the world of logistics with Trey, our autonomous forklift — already deployed in real operations and backed by a strategic partnership with Toyota. You'll be at the center of real-world deployment, helping customers go live with advanced robotics in high-impact environments. Our team consists of 100+ super-talented people, including top-notch experts in the field of hardware and software engineering, and is devoted to developing robots with a mission of making people's work easier. We are an ambitious group of tech enthusiasts with different backgrounds, skills, and experiences, very excited and passionate about what we do! And above all, we cherish team spirit, constant learning and kindness. There is much more to learn, so we hope this piqued your curiosity! About the role This role is all about being in the field — running structured tests, identifying issues, working through system setups, and helping bring robots into full operation on-site. You'll play a key role in bridging product and deployment by combining testing, troubleshooting, and basic software/hardware configuration. If you're not comfortable with frequent travel and working in real-world environments, this role likely isn't the right fit. You'll be the boots on the ground, making sure our robots perform flawlessly in the real world — where it truly counts. We are looking for a person who is ready to travel for around 50% of the time to work on sites across different states. Responsibilities we'll trust you with: This role integrates three core disciplines: field deployment engineering, customer support, and product feedback. You'll bridge the gap between hands-on implementation, direct client interaction, and internal product improvement
Robot Deployment Activities:
Commission and configure Gideon's AMR systems: software, hardware, system checks, calibration, and performance validation Set up the environment (charging stations, network, and infrastructure) Conduct functional testing and log analysis to ensure safe and reliable operation Provide on-site customer training, knowledge transfer, and deployment documentation for project handover Collaborate with the project manager on required documentation and deliverables Surface issues early and ensure robots are ready for go-live Travel extensively (up to 60%) for customer site deployments On-Site Support Troubleshoot and resolve system malfunctions, including urgent repairs and replacements Offer immediate customer support for critical issues Assist remotely (phone, email, ticketing) and resolve minor operational problems During Off-Site Periods Analyze system logs to identify and address suboptimal robot behavior Support internal software and hardware testing, providing feedback to improve product reliability Maintain and improve technical, deployment, and customer-facing documentation Your area of expertise: A field-first, hands-on mindset — someone who thrives outside the office, in real operational settings Willingness and availability to travel frequently, sometimes for extended on-site work Experience with robotics, industrial automation, or commissioning hardware/software systems is a plus Basic experience with Linux OS, Docker and Git Familiarity with hardware platforms and robot sensors (cameras, lidars, ultrasonic, etc) Basics in scripting programming languages (Bash, Python) Basic software knowledge: understanding of logs, system states, network configuration, etc Strong troubleshooting instincts and clear communication skill Comfortable working independently and representing the company on-site with customers Familiarity with bug tracking/test tools (e.g. Jira, test management systems) is a plus Valid US work authorization and driver's license required Bonus points: Familiarity with Robot Operating System (ROS) Experience with electrical and mechanical tools
