Job Description
Job Title:
Fire Protection Engineer (Remote - Florida) Job Description This remote Fire Protection Engineer role focuses on designing and supporting fire protection, life safety, and mechanical/MEP systems for government, federal, higher education, and institutional projects across North Florida. You will serve as the primary in-house fire protection resource while spending a significant portion of your time on hands-on mechanical and MEP design. The position requires residence within driving distance of the Fort Walton Beach / Panhandle region (or broader North Florida area such as Tallahassee or Gainesville) to support coordination and occasional site visits and client meetings. Responsibilities Design and support fire protection and life safety systems for government, federal, higher education, and institutional projects. Prepare, review, and sign/seal fire protection and life safety calculations, drawings, and technical reports in accordance with applicable codes and standards. Apply NFPA, IBC, and Florida Building Code requirements to all design work to ensure compliance and safety. Support mechanical and broader MEP design projects using Revit and related engineering software in a consulting design-firm environment. Collaborate closely with architects, internal MEP engineering teams, clients, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) from early design through construction. Serve as the primary in-house fire protection engineering resource, with internal support, for federal and other project types that require this capability. Respond to RFIs, submittals, and design coordination comments during construction to resolve issues and maintain design intent. Occasionally conduct site visits and attend client meetings within the local region to support project coordination and field verification. Contribute to multi-discipline coordination by integrating mechanical, fire protection, and life safety requirements into cohesive design packages. Use modern engineering tools and platforms, including Revit, AutoCAD, and collaboration tools, to deliver high-quality design documents. Maintain responsibility for hands-on design work rather than purely oversight or project management tasks, ensuring detailed technical involvement. Support the strategic need for in-house fire protection capability for federal and other regulated projects by maintaining and developing expertise in this area. Essential Skills Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida or active pursuit of PE licensure with EIT completed. 5-10 years of fire protection engineering experience, or a minimum of 4+ years of engineering experience under a PE in a design-firm environment. Strong knowledge of NFPA standards, the International Building Code (IBC), and the Florida Building Code. Experience designing fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems as part of fire protection and life safety packages. Strong Revit-based design experience, particularly in mechanical and MEP design contexts. Experience working in a design-firm environment, preferably with MEP consulting exposure. Knowledge of mechanical systems and the ability to support multi-discipline coordination across MEP trades. Ability and willingness to serve as the primary in-house fire protection resource while balancing mechanical/MEP design responsibilities. Residence within driving distance of the Fort Walton Beach / Panhandle region or broader North Florida area to enable occasional site visits and in-person coordination. Ability to work effectively in a remote environment while maintaining strong communication and collaboration with distributed teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related discipline. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) completed, with an active plan to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure if not already licensed. Experience using Revit and related engineering software to support mechanical and MEP design projects. Familiarity with AutoCAD and modern collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams. Ability and willingness to pursue Fire Protection Engineer certification or specialized fire protection credentials if not already obtained. Comfort working as a sole in-house fire protection resource, even when fire protection work represents a smaller portion of overall responsibilities. Experience coordinating with architects, clients, and AHJs on code compliance and design approvals. Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports, responding to RFIs, and participating in client and team meetings. Self-motivated approach suited to a remote, responsibility-based work culture with high professional autonomy. Work Environment This role operates within a fully remote-enabled engineering firm that emphasizes flexibility, work-life balance, and long-term career growth. You will primarily work from home while using modern engineering tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Teams, with company-provided laptop, monitors, and IT support. The environment is hands-on and design-focused rather than oversight-only or project-management-centric, with most of your time spent on mechanical and MEP design and approximately ten percent initially on fire protection work. You will collaborate virtually with architects and internal MEP teams, and occasionally travel within North Florida for site visits or client meetings, particularly in the Fort Walton Beach / Panhandle region. The firm offers 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employee coverage, flexible responsibility-based PTO, and a culture built around stability, growth, and long-tenured engineers.
