The returnable packaging team manages reusable packaging assets that move parts between suppliers and Tesla factories. As a Process Engineer, you will own the design, standardization, and continuous improvement of Container Management Center (CMC) operations. This includes optimizing returnable transport packaging (RTP) container flow to support material handling, production, warehouse layouts, and processes across all Tesla products. Working closely with 3PL partners, warehouse operations, production control, logistics, finance, safety, and material planning, you will translate business needs into fast, well-executed decisions — from layout optimizations and scrap handling to new site launches. The ideal candidate is decisive under ambiguity, learns quickly, and brings a strong bias for action — equally comfortable analyzing data, redesigning a floor layout, leading a Kaizen, and holding a 3PL accountable to a service-level agreement. What You'll Do Lead new site launches and warehouse expansions end-to-end — from layout and process design through ramp-up to steady state — ensuring capital and footprint efficiency while owning PFEP standardization and operational trackers that drive material flow visibility across the entire value stream Design and optimize facility layouts, material flow, and RTP conveyance by analyzing buffer sizes and applying slotting, velocity-zone, and dock-flow logic; create multi-process workstation layouts and staffing models informed by time studies to execute line/station rebalances as volume and mix shift Design, document, and maintain Standard Work Instructions (SWIs), SOPs, visual work instructions, job cards, and process maps to ensure process consistency and compliance Build and maintain reporting tools, dashboards, and trackers to monitor KPIs such as cycle times, utilization rates, and compliance metrics; interpret data into actionable insights to quantify opportunities and develop business cases and cost-benefit analyses — covering workforce planning, cost, capacity, quality, and safety — driving them through implementation to sustainment Partner with IT and Production Control to define, implement, and optimize Material Flow Systems (MFS), Logistics Execution Systems (LES), and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) to support operational scalability and process accuracy Employ Lean and 5S principles, lead continuous improvement projects, conduct root cause analyses for operational failures or non-compliance, and implement corrective actions; maintain a safe work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing safety standards and actively coaching 3PL personnel and visitors in real time Collaborate cross-functionally with Warehouse Operations, Production Control, IT, Logistics, Safety, Material Planning, Suppliers, and 3PL Partners — engaging stakeholders from site leaders to floor personnel — to align processes, remove bottlenecks, reduce total logistics cost, and ensure execution to service-level agreements What You'll Bring Degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, or equivalent experience with demonstrated exceptional ability Experience working with or managing 3PL partners in a warehouse or logistics environment — including yard operations such as trailer staging, gate management, and yard flow optimization — is highly preferred Hands-on experience in process engineering, warehouse, or logistics operations within a fast-paced, high-volume environment (e.g., automotive, consumer electronics, industrial manufacturing), including facility layout design, workstation configurations, space utilization, slotting, dock design, and capacity planning using AutoCAD or similar CAD software Proven application of Lean, 5S, and structured problem-solving methodologies with documented improvements; experience creating and maintaining process documentation (SWIs, SOPs, process maps, visual work instructions) and performing time studies, labor capacity planning, or workforce allocation Advanced proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, complex formulas, dashboards) and experience with SQL, Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools; analytically driven with the ability to evaluate complex data sets and present clear recommendations to leadership Strong project management, leadership, and communication skills; a decisive, fast-learning problem-solver comfortable moving between the strategic and the tactical with a relentless drive to follow through until sustained results are achieved Ability to work on the warehouse floor for extended periods, lift up to 30 lbs. occasionally, and operate comfortably in environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and industrial equipment Compensation and Benefits Benefits Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire: Medical plans > plan options with $0 payroll deduction Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution Company Paid (Health Savings Accounts) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High-Deductible medical plan with HSA Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits Company paid Basic Life, AD&D Short-term and long-term disability insurance (90 day waiting period) Employee Assistance Program Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions, Accrued hours for Hourly positions), and Paid Holidays Back-up childcare and parenting support resources Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs Tesla Babies program Commuter benefits Employee discounts and perks program Tesla is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer committed to diversity in the workplace.
