  • Position Overview:
  • The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Light Source (SSRL), a directorate of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, is a national user facility providing synchrotron radiation for research in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, material science, medicine, and physics.
SSRL operates and maintains synchrotron radiation beam lines, a 3GeV electron storage ring (SPEAR3) and the associated injector facility. The SSRL Beam Line Systems Division is responsible for the design and construction of experimental stations, hardware upgrades, and mechanical maintenance of the SSRL beam lines and SPEAR3 accelerator components and sub-assemblies. The SSRL Beam Line Systems Division seeks a Senior Science & Engineering Technician to directly support the development, assembly and installation of accelerator hardware. The Senior Science & Engineering Technician will demonstrate a sense of mechanical fabrication, construction/manufacturing knowledge and practical machine operation. A Senior Science & Engineering Electro-Mech Technician must be skilled in drawing interpretation, hardware installation, and demonstrate work safe/smart ethics and attention to detail.
  • Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • + Support mechanical, electrical, and vacuum group members to ensure safe and effective installation and maintenance of SSRL and SPEAR components.
+ Develop lift and material handling plans to ensure the safe handling of heavy loads during installation and maintenance activities. + Working with forklifts and other lifting devices, ensuring that they are certified for use. + Familiar with hardware, mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic tools and components. + Operate metal processing and welding machines to support accelerator projects. + Operate hydrostatic and flow testing equipment as instructed. + Serve as team member in the execution of mechanical maintenance and new mechanical system installation for the SSRL X-ray beam lines and SPEAR3 accelerator complex. _The duties listed in this section are designed to provide a representative sampling of key tasks and/or responsibilities associated with the job._ _They are not intended to provide a complete list of all the duties performed by employees in the classification._
  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education & Experience:
  • + Mechanical Technology/Fabrication or maintenance experience, or five years of relevant work experience.
+ Applying maintenance and engineering principles /practices to perform technical services and support. + Working in a laboratory or industrial environment and supporting apparatus such as motors, process pipping and mechanical structure. + Background in mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems associated with the installation and upkeep of an industrial, scientific, or equivalent facility.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • + Ability to integrate work and be able to evaluate possible effects on mechanical systems.
+ Support installation activities including the use of cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling devices. + Follow preventative maintenance plans, technical notes, and assist with contingency planning. + Knowledge in plumbing, precision tube bending, and tube/hydraulic hose fittings. + Record keeping skills and an ability to monitor and support administrative and technical duties related to assigned work. + Interpret and determine validity of data and check own work. + Ability to interface and communicate with staff including technical, engineering, scientific, and students.
  • In addition, preferred requirements include experience in the following areas:
  • + Certificate of completion in Mechanical Technology/Mechanical Fabrication or maintenance related discipline

To obtain this credential, employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job. 28(Step 10) per hour _._ _Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs._ This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
