Position Overview This position serves as a member of the technical team which makes detailed inspections of bridges throughout the state to fulfill the requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and documents deficiencies found to support load ratings and emergency repairs. 
Essential Functions:
Assists in performing technical duties including instrument operation, precise measurements, and recording of observations in conjunction with detailed inspections of major bridge structures statewide. Performs visual inspections of bridges to seek out damaged or deteriorated components, records and photographs problems detected, and assists in making recommendations for repair or structural analysis. Assists in preparing bridge inspection reports under the direction of the Bridge Inspection Group Technician. Operates and maintains a variety of expensive and sophisticated equipment used by the team. Reviews traffic protection established by district team sections in accordance with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) standards. Assists in performing calculations in conjunction with the inspections and reports and in performing field calculations to ensure accuracy before inspections are finished. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, or a job-related technical/science curriculum. OR Two years of engineering experience. Conditions of Employment Ability to work in confined spaces, access many of the components of large bridges and at extreme heights over land and water. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity in an outdoor environment. Ability to work in an adverse environment of weather, debris, traffic conditions and heights. Valid driver's license. Continual statewide travel with overnight stays more than 60 percent of the year. Successful completion of a background screening.
