Job Description

Job Overview SET (Sustainable Emerging Technologies) Team Technician II We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Technician II to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will operate, maintain, and repair bench and pilot-scale equipment and systems in a complex pilot plant environment. Journey level of Technician series. Works under general supervision to perform more difficult and senior-level duties. Assists with training employees at the Technician I level and provides feedback on their progress.

Operate, maintain, and repair bench and pilot-scale equipment and systems in a complex pilot plant environment.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Journey level of Technician series. Works under general supervision to perform more difficult and senior-level duties.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Assists with training employees at the Technician I level and provides feedback on their progress.
JOB DUTIES
The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not prevent the assignment of work that is appropriately related to this class. Follow safety protocols at all times. Maintain clean and safe operations, equipment, and work environment. Operate and maintain bench and pilot-scale equipment. Test pumps, fans, generators, and related equipment. Perform routine preventive maintenance. Clean, lubricate, and maintain parts and equipment to prevent failure and degradation. Draft and maintain documentation related to equipment and standard operating procedures. Prepare inspection, maintenance, and repair logs and records. Collect and input data from operation and testing. Detect, troubleshoot, and diagnose malfunctions with equipment, materials, and structures. Identify causes of error or problems. Assess and evaluate solutions and collaborate with engineers to implement changes and enhance operability. Repair, tear down, rebuild, and install plant equipment. Design and implement mechanical alterations to new or existing equipment. Replace defective components. Fabricate components as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
High School degree Vocational training or associate's degree in related field.
Experience:
Minimum one year of experience as a Technician I.
Knowledge of:
Mechanical concepts and principles. Diagnostic, maintenance, and repair methods and procedures of bench and pilot-scale equipment. Troubleshooting techniques and practices. Occupational hazards and precautionary principles. Safety policies and practices. Recordkeeping methods and data recording procedures for equipment and systems. Software necessary for maintaining records and ordering parts and supplies.
Ability to:
Operate and maintain pilot plant equipment. Monitor gauges and systems. Troubleshoot and assess by gathering and combining pieces of information, finding relationships, and diagnosing problems. Monitor equipment and processes, make improvements, and enhance operability. Read, understand, and follow safety protocols and practices. Use and wear personal protective equipment properly and consistently. Read, understand, and follow standard operating procedures and manuals. Use hand tools, forklifts, and related equipment in a safe manner.0 Design and fabricate mechanical components. Collect, enter, and evaluate data. Think critically, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches, and use sound judgment. Work as a member of a team and foster a cooperative work environment. Work under stressful conditions within time constraints to maintain or restore pilot plant functions. Adapt to changing circumstances and priorities and act proactively. Lift and move heavy objects and work in confined spaces. Physical and Mental Standards The physical and mental standards described here are representative of those that must typically be met by employees to perform the essential functions of this class successfully. Frequently walk and stand in a laboratory environment for prolonged periods. Frequently use finger dexterity and operate a keyboard and laboratory equipment. Occasionally kneel and crouch. Crawling may occur rarely. Frequently climb ladders and stairs. Occasionally lift and carry 50 pounds. Occasionally push and pull items weighing 50 pounds. Frequently use vision to read documents, view computer screens, and see close and distant objects. Frequently use speech and hearing to engage in conversation, in person, and over the telephone. Frequently exposed to heat, dust, noise, heights, extreme pressures, vibration, explosions, and confined spaces. Frequently exposed to airborne particles, vapors/fumes/odors, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Constantly utilize mental and emotional acuity for detail recall, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem solving. In the event of an emergency, employee may be required to run short distances to evacuate a facility.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Pilot Plant environment. Noise level is moderate and may require hearing protection. Subject to heat above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Respiratory personal protective equipment may be utilized. Confined space entry and exit. Use personal protective equipment such as eye protection and gloves to protect against hazardous substances. Job duties may occasionally require working extended hours or hours outside of the regular schedule.
